You hold the key to a power struggle so ancient, so vast, it is beyond your feeble comprehension. Picture an entire army, each in command of an Omnitrix and all at my command. I will be invincible. I will rule the Universe! And the only thing standing between me and my destiny... is you!

– Vilgax, explaining his end goal to a captive Ben.[12]

Vilgax is an intergalactic alien warlord and conqueror, a Chimera Sui Generis who serves as Ben's archenemy, and the most recurring villain in the ongoing franchise, having appeared multiple times in every series. Ben considers him as one of the most dangerous villains he has faced.

Vilgax was the main antagonist of Ben 10, Season 2 of Alien Force, and Season 3 of Ultimate Alien.

Appearance[]

Vilgax is a humanoid creature with a face resembling that of an octopus. He has tentacles dangling in the front of his face, like a beard. His skin is pale green with yellowish spots on his face and tentacles. He lacks any sort of visible ears or nose. He has red eyes.

In the Original Series he wore a black and red-brownish armored suit and gloves. His armor was spiked at the shoulder and arm pads. He had green sacs on the sides of his head. His mouth was attached to the sacs by a respirator.

As of Secrets, he had become much burlier than before. He had a mask covering his mouth, attached to the armor, and new shoulder and leg pads. He also had metallic gloves with small fingers as well as reddish brown cylinder-like objects piercing his arms, giving him much stronger and more muscular limbs. His tentacles were now much longer. He had six tentacles in front and two behind.

In Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, Vilgax had healed from his injuries in the first episode of the Original Series. He no longer had red-brownish armor, a mask, or green cheek sacs. He wore a red and blue armor. He had a belt which was attached to the raygun pocket. He wore dark blue stockings with metallic squares. He had the Ruby Ray of Rouleau on his right hand, and the Shield of Seagle on his left arm. He now had just five tentacles, all on the front of his face, and his eyes were larger. He also had a metallic plate replacing the green sac on his head.

In Omniverse, he no longer has the Ruby Ray of Rouleau or Shield of Seagle. He regained his original green cheek sacs. He has dirty teeth. Two of his face tentacles now end with a spiky-looking shape, resembling actual squid tentacles. His armor is similar to his Original Series, with the exception being the cylinders on his arms now being gold in colour. He wears black clothes underneath his armor and black stockings. He now has fingerless gloves. He wears a headpiece similar to his shoulder pads.

Occasional Appearances[]

In his true form, Vilgax more closely resembles an octopus, having the shape of one with many tentacles. He has three spikes on his head. He has gills on his cheeks.

In And Then There Were 10, Vilgax became severly injured after the Chimeran Hammer's control room was attacked by Xylene's ship.

In The Secret of Chromastone, Vilgax was seen wearing his Alien Force armor in Tetrax's flashback, but blue rather than red. His belt is recolored grey, he lacks the Ruby Ray of Rouleau and the Shield of Seagle. He is also missing the shoulder piece and sleeve on his left arm.

In Primus and The Final Battle: Part 2, Vilgax wears the Omnitrix on his right hand.

In Malgax Attacks, Vilgax wears the Malware Armor, a variant of the Retaliator Armor.

In A New Dawn, a young Vilgax appeared.

Personality[]

Regarded as "the most dangerous being in the universe", Vilgax is a ruthless, cruel, and power-hungry galactic warlord. In nearly all his encounters, Vilgax operates with the single-minded objective of acquiring the Omnitrix and exploiting its technology to build an army capable of transforming into aliens at his command, then use that power to conquer the entire universe.[12]

Throughout his entire pursuit for absolute power, Vilgax was not willing to let anyone or anything stand in his way. As such, he would get revenge on anyone who defeated him before. This shows that Vilgax can hold a grudge, most notably against Max and his family for the great number of losses he has suffered at their hands. Between this and his imprisonment in the Null Void, he has developed such a pathological hatred towards Ben that he wants to kill him as much as getting the Omnitrix. Of course, Vilgax's quest for the Omnitrix slowly became his secondary goal as his desire for Ben's defeat and/or death became even greater.

Vilgax originally chased Ben Tennyson merely to achieve this goal and had few concerns about his fate once he had the Omnitrix. But after escaping the Null Void, he seemed to have gone partially insane, as he was enraged more easily and exhibited facial ticks.[13] Luckily, he appeared to have recovered by Alien Force.

Vilgax is one of the most feared beings in the universe, having conquered ten worlds, destroyed five others,[merch 2] and created a black hole.[pop-up 2][14] In short, he has such a fearful reputation that almost no sentient life-form is willing to work for him, apart from Psyphon. Because of this drawback, he has to use armies of Bioids and Mechadroids, obedient machines programmed to serve him as his crew and soldiers.[pop-up 3][15][merch 2] However, Vilgax is capable of hiring mercenaries, if he can meet their price.

Initially, Max was a foil to Vilgax, who was at first the only person who had ever defeated him. However, after he began his quest for the Omnitrix, Max's grandson Ben became his ultimate foil, making the two sworn archenemies for years to come. And while Ben is rather comedic and is usually looking out for others, Vilgax is always portrayed a serious character and only looks out for himself, with the exception of his own race.

While stranded on Earth following his defeat at the end of Alien Force, Vilgax's reputation as the most dangerous being became fractured. By that point, Ben has been seen as the only one who could stop Vilgax, cementing his obsession of killing Ben in order to reclaim his fallen empire.

Vilgax can be very manipulative, notably so of the Galactic Code of Conduct, in order to achieve his goals. This becomes very useful when discovering that his squid-like form resembles the alien of knowledge worshiped by a cult of humans known as the Flame Keepers' Circle. Adopting this role for his own, he skillfully manipulates his new followers into helping him escape the Earth.[16]

Despite his cruel and villainous tendencies, Vilgax does care about his own people (taking his role as Vilgaxia's ruler and champion very seriously), so much so that he is willing to put his own life on the line and use whatever other means necessary to ensure Vilgaxia's and its people's safety; even if it means begging his enemies for help.[17] Even then, judging by his actions later during the franchise, he cares more about the glory than truly being dedicated. If this is true, then his attempts to protect his race are purely for personal gain. This proves to be true in Omniverse, where he briefly destroys most of the Multiverse without even sparing his universe or at least his planet.

Vilgax is highly afraid of Ma Vreedle,[18] and there is a rumor that Ma Vreedle once made Vilgax cry.[19][20]

By the time of Omniverse, it would seem Vilgax's cruelty and ruthlessness have reached new heights, best exemplified when detonated his Chronosapien Time Bomb to wipe out all but No Watch Ben's timeline.[21]

Powers and Abilities[]

Vilgax is capable of firing powerful powerful energy projectiles at his foes, as demonstrated when he attempted to end No Watch Ben's life.[7]

Vilgax is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, being able to greatly hold his own even before being cybernetically enhanced and augmented.[1] Vilgax is also proficient at using weapons, such as blasters,[22] and especially swords.[12][7][9]

Before his augmentation, Vilgax was still very strong, being able to kick XLR8 quite far into a tree.[1] After his augmentation, Vilgax is able to effortlessly break through walls and generate small earthquakes.[23]

Vilgax possesses an immense level of durability, being able to survive a nuclear explosion at point-blank range (though it was made clear he was seriously injured and widely believed to be dead at that time).[24] Vilgax was also able to withstand Chromastone's energy beams,[25] recover within seconds from the Omnitrix's explosion,[4] and even endure a brutal assault by Diamondhead, Atomic-X, Electricyeti and Gwen 10's Cannonbolt.[23]

Vilgax possesses enhanced reflexes, being able to catch XLR8 at full-speed.[12]

Vilgax has conditioned himself to survive against the harsh conditions of space without protective gear for brief moments.[pop-up 4][13][22]

Vilgax is immune to fire, being able to completely withstand Swampfire and Ultimate Swampfire's fire blasts,[4] as well as surviving a massive wave of fire from Heatblast with no visible damage.[12] Vilgax can also safely pass through Earth's atmosphere,[26] Vilgax can also be empowered by the Codon Stream on Primus, making him increase massively in size.[5]

Vilgax can understand Sotoraggians.[13] Vilgax can also speak to and through his DNA,[DR 1] as shown when he talked to Upgrade when he was merged with Rojo.[27]

Vilgax can turn into a giant octopus-like monster, which he referred to as his true form, only while in water.[4][MW 1] However, this form is a result from multiple genetic experiments and not his normal biology.[merch 3]

Former Cybernetic Enhancements[]

In the Original Series, following his mutilation in the battle with Xylene's Ship, Vilgax had upgraded himself with cybernetic enhancements. Their primary function was to increase his strength: they gave him a larger native muscle mass, and the pins in his arms could retract and allow him to bulk up even more, increasing his arms to a massive size[12][14] (though at the cost of feeling great pain and heightening his rage).[pop-up 5][28]

Vilgax could also jump extremely high and fast, enough to catch a Lepidopterran in mid-flight.[12] As a result of wearing his armor, he also grew taller and his fingers formed into sharp claws.[14]

Former Absorbed Powers[]

Vilgax could project red laser beams from his eyes, capable of homing in on their target. These lasers are incredibly fast, as they were able to catch up with Helen.[3] [26] They are also very strong, as they instantly knocked out Helen upon contact, they can also cut through Swampfire's vines.[4]

Vilgax had breath as powerful as cyclone-like winds, being able to blow away Alan and fully extinguish him and his fire blast.[3]

Vilgax gained an immense amount of strength from the powers he had absorbed, being able to easily defeat Humungousaur at his full size.[25]

Vilgax could hear sounds from several miles away.[29]

Vilgax could fly at high speeds and survive in space.[26]

Equipment[]

Vilgax could use the Ruby Ray of Rouleau as a laser projector, and was able to considerably weaken Ultimos with one shot.[3] According to Vilgax, Ultimos' ability to survive the shot was unusual, suggesting that most other beings would have been immediately killed.

Vilgax could use the Shield of Seagle to generate a powerful personal force field. The force field can become a knight-like shield on his arm or a dome/sphere to protect his whole body, and is able to defend him from attacks such as Ultimos' punches,[3] Jetray's neuroshock blasts,[25] or the guns of a spaceship.[26] It can even let Vilgax cut clean through that same spaceship.

Vilgax could use his gauntlet as a taser, allowing him to grab and shock Big Chill while intangible. It also gave him the ability to coat his hands in light energy and use them as boxing gloves.[25]

Vilgax's Sword can project energy beams or coat itself in flames, or crystals able to refract Chromastone's energy beams.[25] Even without the flames or crystal, the sword is incredibly sharp, able to easily cut though stone and Chromastone.

Vilgax kept a raygun in a holster on his right hip. Vilgax lost all of his equipment excluding his sword when he was arrested after The Ultimate Enemy: Part 2.

After fusing with Malware's remains, Vilgax gained access to Malware's ability to absorb technology, and access to all the technology Malware absorbed. His already mighty physical strength was increased to where he could punch anything off Galvan Prime and Galvan B with no difficulty, including Atomix, one of Ben's strongest aliens.[9]

Weaknesses[]

Vilgax is vulnerable to electricity, such as that generated by a Gimlinopithecus.[23]

If Vilgax is in his true form and becomes too weak, he cannot change back into his humanoid form.[16]

Vilgax is both superstitious of and fears magic and mysticism.[merch 3] He is also terrified of Ma Vreedle, enough that he will leave the scene if she is present.[18] He can even be terrified of Toepick's face.[DJW 1]

As demonstrated by Zs'Skayr and several members of his species, Vilgax is vulnerable to being converted into an Ectonurites.[26]

Vilgax can become immobilized in ice.[25]

Vilgax is vulnerable to the cold virus.[29]

They are then teleported to Bellwood to defeat Buttercup in her Anti-Form. After traveling through caves, blasting with turrets and exploring the Null Void the team finally face Vilgax. Unfortunately Vilgax teleports the team to Primus and summons Ultimate Kevin to destroy them.

When Vilgax is defeated, he flies away from a sinking ship leaving cured Numbuh 1. The heroes then fight Negative Samurai Jack and Vilgax in order to defeat a greater evil.

Trivia[]

  • Vilgax is the first character to be introduced in the franchise.
  • The following characters have been mistaken for Vilgax:
    • Myaxx, as both of them are Chimera Sui Generi.[13]
    • Helena Xagliv, as they share the same voice actor and because "Xagliv" is "Vilgax" spelled backwards.[30]
    • Bill Gacks, as they also share the same voice actor and their names sound similar. Bill admits that he is aware of this misunderstanding.[31]
  • Vilgax was the first villain who killed Ben, having killed him in Vengeance of Vilgax: Part 2.
  • Vilgax will meet his death approximately 200 years after the events of the original series.[pop-up 6]
  • Vilgax lost the powers he stole from the ten heroes from ten worlds at the end of Ultimate Alien.[MW 2]
  • Vilgax was originally stated to be 15 feet tall.[AC 1] However, this was retconned in Alien Force, in which he is as tall as Humungousaur (12 feet).[32]
  • In Omniverse, Derrick J. Wyatt had intended for Vilgax to look like his original self, but Matt Youngberg thought Vilgax's Alien Force/Ultimate Alien appearance had more personality.[DJW 2]
    • Derrick designed Vilgax with the respirator he had back in the original series, but executives discarded it because they wanted the character to emote more clearly. Derrick hoped to eventually use the respirator on the design, but it never came to pass.[DJW 3][DJW 4]
  • Dwayne McDuffie thought of Vilgax as Ben's most relentless enemy.[DM 1]
  • Vilgax is the most powerful Chimera Sui Generis.[DM 2]
  • Derrick believed that Vilgax was much stronger than Khyber. He gave an analogy, stating that if Khyber were Captain America, Vilgax would be Thanos.[DJW 5]
    • If they were to fight each other without equipment, Vilgax would win.[MW 3]
  • Vilgax has never used the raygun in his holster during his appearances in Alien Force and Ultimate Alien.
    • Vilgax is seen wielding the raygun in promotional art.
    • Additionally, there is also art that features him wielding a hammer and an unidentifiable weapon that is never seen in the show.
      • Vilgax is seen using both of these weapons in Nintendo DS version of Vilgax Attacks in his boss battle. The hammer can generate a short-range field of golden electricity when thrust forward or be thrown like a boomerang. The raygun shoots regular blue bolts. He is also observed using mines and self-tracking lasers.
  • Vilgax is Eugene Son's favorite villain.[ES 1]
  • Tramm Wigzell named Vilgax.[DJW 2]
  • Sebastian Montes was the one who came up with Vilgax's arm rods being boost steroids. Originally, they were just for show.[AC 1]
  • Vilgax and his spike ball vehicle that appeared in Secrets was designed by Dave Johnson.[AC 1]
  • Vilgax is rumored to have a warrior son who is being raised in another dimension.[merch 3]
  • Vilgax is similar to Cthulhu, both in appearance and plan to conquer the universe.
    • This is further alluded to in his true form, and when he absorbs Dagon's power.
  • When asked to name the 10 planets Vilgax had conquered, Matt Wayne jokingly gave the names: Moe, Larry, Curly, Ganymede, Daphne, Velma, Arcturus-7, Westworld, Abbott and Costello-3, and El Segundo.[MW 4]
  • Vilgax is one of four villains that has appeared in every series in the franchise, including the reboot, the others being Dr. Animo, Hex, and Charmcaster.
  • Vilgax is the only villain, and the second character after Ben, to have appeared in the first and last episodes of the Classic Continuity.
  • A negative-polarity version of Vilgax would look like a shining knight of justice in gleaming silver armor.[DJW 6]
