The Staff of Ages, also known as the Staff of Power,[script 1] is a powerful magical object owned by Hex's family throughout the Classic Continuity. It is the most powerful focusing talisman ever set among the nine realms.[1][2] It first appeared in the episode Lucky Girl.

Appearance[]

The Staff of Ages is four feet long.[script 1]

In the Original Series, the staff was thin and wooden brown. It had a carving of a bird skull on top, with a metal ring that ran through its eyes.

In Ultimate Alien, the staff's wood was much brighter, and its ring was golden.

In Omniverse, the staff retains the golden ring, and its head is now silver.

The staff is habitually stored inside magical spaces that are deceptively smaller than it, such as Charmcaster's bag or inside a magic book.[3][2]

The Staff of Ages is a large source of eldritch power, and can amplify the abilities of a powerful-enough magic user. Many spells can be cast through the staff without needing to be cast manually; the user need simply point or raise the staff in the direction of their target.

According to Hex, only 'master magicians' are able to even use the staff, though this was proven somewhat false.[4]

When the staff is projecting powerful blasts of mana for a spell, it does so (typically) from the mouth of its bird skull, which opens up.

The staff on its own has an incredible magical durability: sturdy enough to survive the impact of very destructive spells,[2] and can be swung to redirect incoming mana discs[5] or cut right through mana constructs.[2] It is also very physically strong, as it can knock away a rolling Arburian Pelarota [6] and crack buildings in half.[2]

Despite its magical resistance, some spells cast toward the staff will still function, as demonstrated when Charmcaster used both a summoning spell on it and a transformation spell to turn it into a snake.[3]

The staff is capable of flight and is able to fly its user.[4][6]

Whoever is the owner of the staff is capable of instantly calling it to their hand.[4][2]

History[]

Background[]

After it was crafted, the Staff of Ages was "left at the door by the lurker at the threshold",[1][2] likely referring to the Door to Anywhere. Hex came into possession of it some time before the Original Series, as it is reportedly his entire family's birthright.

Ben 10[]

In Lucky Girl, Hex appeared with the staff in hand, to steal the Archamada Book of Magic. He used the staff to reverse his prior levitation spell on the Tennysons; cast a fire spell on a rescue tarp that Ben as XLR8 fashioned; and fire both red crystals and a bright light to slow XLR8 down. Later, Hex used the staff to cast and direct a spell that animated a haunted house in order to draw out Gwen as Lucky Girl. He used the staff to fly after her, and attempted to cast a spell to reveal her on the other side of a wall, but Gwen accidentally caused the wall to crash down on him; he used the staff to conjure a shield and fire a beam at her. Later, Four Arms interrupted Hex's tempestakinesis spell and knocked the staff out of his hand. Hex recovered and summoned the staff to his hand, casting a stone creature-animation spell through it. He also used it to briefly resume his tempestakinesis spell. Hex was eventually aprehended, and the staff was either left at the site or confiscated.

In Tough Luck, Charmcaster broke into Hex's prison and returned him the staff. She noted that it doesn't work, its magic must have drained out of it, but Hex effortlessly brings it to life, citing his abilities as a master magician. Hex used it to incapacitate two prison guards, blow open a hold in his cell wall, and intimidate Charmcaster into continuing to work with him. As the two found the Tennysons at a Las Vegas magic convention, Hex used the staff to throw back Amazing Alan; cause explosions in the crowd; guard against and repel Wildmutt's pounce; and blow Gwen and Max backward into a maze. During their fight on the tower, Hex used it to melt elevator doors shut and continuously swipe at Ben whilst standing on his hoverboard. When Ben regained control of the hoverboard as Wildvine and crashed it back on the tower, Hex dropped the staff. As he got up, Charmcaster revealed her plans to betray him and blasted him away before he could summon the staff to his hand. Gwen picked the staff up to intimidate Charmcaster, but she laughed, as only a "master magician" could use it. To everyone's surprise, it managed to shoot her in Gwen's hands. When Wildvine destroyed the Charms of Bezel before they could be reformed in their ritual, the staff's mana (as well as Hex and Charmcaster's) was drawn out and returned to the Keystone of Bezel.

In Don't Drink the Water, it was revealed that not all of Hex and the staff's strength was lost. Hex uses the staff to fly; shoot a spell at the Tennysons; and telekinetically move a car from a carnival ride, which inadvertently broke open the dunk tank that housed water from the fountain of youth. He then used it to knock back Cannonbolt and fire a spell at Max.
