“ | Who needs water when you've got jaws that can rip through steel? | ” |
– Ripjaws.[2] |
Ripjaws is the Omnitrix's DNA sample of a Piscciss Volann[3][4] from the planet Piscciss.[5]
Appearance[]
Ben as Ripjaws[]
Ripjaws shares a number of traits with Earth's aquatic life, such as an alligator, an eel, a leech,[Bandai 1] an anglerfish, and a shark. He can change between a fishtail with triangular lines or legs at will and has a phosphorescent light on his head.
In the Original Series, Ripjaws' body was a pale grey. He had webbed digits; four on his hands and two on his feet, the former of which hosted yellow claws. He sported gills going down his neck and torso, as well as patches of scales all over his body. On his arms and atop his neck were short swamp green fins. The stem of the angler sprouting from his head appeared the same color as his webbing. His circular eyes appeared vapid and he entirely lacked lips to hide away his surly teeth. When not forming a fish-like tail, he had a loincloth, segmented by off-white lines. The original Omnitrix symbol was located on his left pectoral, which had a black patch covering it.
In Back With a Vengeance, Ripjaws wore a yellow raincoat.
In Ultimate Alien, Ripjaws had a catfish-like face, green eyes with black pupils, two whiskers, a white torso with chest plates similar to Humungosaur, three-fingered hands with black claws, a green lure, and green lips. His tail was colored grey like his skin and his fins were a darker shade of green than in the Original Series. He wore the Ultimatrix symbol on his chest.
In the Ultimate Alien intro, Ripjaws looked almost the same as in the series proper except his tail was black, reflecting his appearance in the Original Series. His lips were also colored black and his lure was white.
In Heroes United, Ripjaws looked mostly the same as in Ultimate Alien except one of his eyes was pink due to a coloring error.
In Omniverse, 16-year-old Ripjaws mostly resembles his original appearance, except that his eyes are green. He now has arm and neck braces. His antenna light is green. He has a big fin on his back. The fins on his arms are longer and he is now hunched back. His claws are black, and his tail is bigger and drags behind him. He now has a belt in place of the strap that holds the Omnitrix symbol on it.
11-year-old Ripjaws appears almost exactly the same as he did in the Original Series, except his eyes and the Omnitrix symbol on his left upper torso are recolored green.
Kevin as Ripjaws[]
Kevin's Ripjaws looked the exact same as Ben's did in the Original Series, but without an Omnitrix symbol. His black patch was also on his right upper torso.
Powers and Abilities[]
Ripjaws' large jaws and sharp teeth are his most deadly weapon, being able to slice through steel.[6][7] His jaw can also unhinge,[DM 1] allowing him to fit a large supply of objects in both his mouth and stomach.[8][6]
Ripjaws' body is built for the sea, as he exclusively breathes in water and can withstand the pressures of the furthest depths of Piscciss.[5] Ripjaws possesses the distinctive ability to turn his legs into a fish's tail, giving himself a merman-like appearance, and vice-versa. When his tail retracts, it takes the shape of a double-sided loincloth with a similar pattern to the tail's. Utilizing this power in underwater environments, Ripjaws can swim at incredible speeds with amazing agility.[8] He can swim at such high speeds that he can create a vortex underwater.[9]
Ripjaws possesses sharp claws that can slice through the metal of Cyber Squids[10] and scrape solid rock.[11]
Ripjaws has enhanced strength, as he was able to easily punch a hole in a dock;[8][12] tear a door of the Perplexahedron open;[13] slam a Mechaneer into the ground hard enough to rock a nearby shipwreck; lasso an anchor;[6] and hold his own against Vulkanus while underwater.[9] He also has tremendous strength in his jaws alone, able to hold up a human in them.[12]
Ripjaws is rather durable, as shown when he was able to withstand being thrown against Sheelane's ship.[9]
Like an anglerfish, he has a phosphorescent lure on his forehead for attracting prey, but it can also be used to illuminate dark areas.[14] Their eyes can glow as well.[12]
Weaknesses[]
“ | Can't...breathe...need...water... | ” |
– Ripjaws dehydrating.[11] |
Ripjaws' greatest weakness is that he cannot stay on land for too long. If Ripjaws wants to stay on land, he would require water or cool temperatures[15] to keep him from dehydrating. If he doesn't have any way of keeping himself hydrated for long enough, he could die. Exposure to extreme heat will cause Ripjaws to dehydrate even quicker.[12][15]
Ripjaws is vulnerable to electricity[8] and strong currents.[5]
Ripjaws can be immobilized by ice, such as the ice breath of an Evolved Necrofriggian, as demonstrated with several Piscciss Volann guards.[5]

Trivia[]
- Ripjaws is the only alien to appear in Ultimate Alien outside of the opening that does not have a speaking role.
- Ripjaws never received a water respirator similar to the one worn by the Piscciss Volann Prisoner during his appearances in the Original Series because he was never meant to be used outside of water.[DJW 1]
- In spite of this, in the Original Series, he tended to appear outside of water and get dehydrated.
- 11-year-old Ripjaws was not necessarily planned to appear in Omniverse flashbacks.[DJW 2]
- Ripjaws was first envisioned as a purple crocodile-like creature under the name Razorjaws. Dave Johnson designed his finalized sketch but had many regrets, noting the weird head shape and numerous teeth in place of lips made it difficult for animators to draw and resulted in him having few appearances.[DJ 1]
- Dave's problem with Ripjaws' original design was that he thought not having lips made it harder for Ripjaws to emote. He also believed that his eyes were "dead".[DJ 2]
