It is a term I coined for a human with a unique genetic component. Each Osmosian has a different ability. Kevin's is absorption, which makes him indispensable to me.

Servantis.[2]

Osmosians are humans with unique genetic components in their DNA.[note 2]

Appearance

Rumble (849)

Gaterboy, Porcupine, and their mother

Being a human subspecies, Osmosians are mostly outwardly indistinguishable from humans. For example, Kevin looks like an ordinary human, but Gaterboy and Porcupine look like humanoid Earth animals, even though their mother is a normal human.

EfA (539)

Aggregor, an Osmosian

Osmosians are outwardly indistinguishable from humans except that they grow four small, rounded, flesh-colored horns on their forehead as they get older.[DM 1]

Powers and Abilities

MI (474)

Michael Morningstar absorbing the life force of Margie

Osmosians have different abilities depending on the individual.[4][2] For example, Michael Morningstar has the ability to absorb many types of energy, including life force, mana, and electricity, to become more powerful.

Energy Absorption

Osmosians can absorb the energy of anything.[DM 2] This includes mana, as Kevin demonstrated in his Ultimate Kevin form on Gwen.[5]

Osmosians can absorb the energy stored in other individuals. This was shown when Kevin, in his Ultimate Kevin form, absorbed Ra'ad, Bivalvan, Galapagus, P'andor and Andreas, who had been turned into energy, from Ultimate Aggregor.[6]

Osmosians can discharge their stored energy by projecting it out of their hands.[7]

Osmosians can infuse machines with their stored energy to activate them, as Kevin demonstrated on an arcade machine, a forklift and a train conductor switch, or overload them, as he demonstrated on a keypad.[7]

DNA Absorption

Similar to their ability to absorb energy, Osmosians can absorb the DNA of other individuals, either directly,[1] remotely,[8] or through devices such as the Omnitrix. By absorbing DNA, they also gain the individuals' powers and undergo mutation to accommodate the absorbed abilities.[note 3]

Osmosians can also absorb DNA by accident, as shown when exposure to feedback from the original Omnitrix granted Kevin the ability to transform into the aliens unlocked in the active playlist at the time, at the cost of only being able to stay human for a short time.[9]

By absorbing their DNA, Osmosians can also drain an individual of their life force.[1]

Matter Absorption

Osmosians can absorb the matter of anything,[DM 2] with some exceptions (such as the Techadon Factory)[10] from any part of his body.[11][DM 3] They can even absorb multiple materials at once.[12] Depending on the amount of the absorbed material they have available, and how they distribute it, they can either coat their body, or part of it, in the material as armor,[13] or completely convert their body, or part of it, into a living version of the material.[14] Their strength and durability in proportion to the material absorbed,[DM 4][DM 5] though they can still feel pain.[15]

Osmosians can absorb the materialistic properties of living beings such as To'kustars,[16] Petrosapiens, Crystalsapiens, Rock Monsters,[DJW 1] and Evolved Vaxasaurians.[DJW 2]

Osmosians can also absorb liquids,[DJW 3][DM 6] and when they do, they gain the properties of that liquid. If an Osmosian absorbs mud, objects will pass through them without causing physical damage. They can even absorb bubblegum and fire.[DJW 4][DJW 5][DM 7]

If an Osmosian absorbs an elastic material, they can "sort of" stretch.[DM 7]

Osmosians can alter their body, such as by generating spikes[17] and spiked finials.[18]

Osmosians can shapeshift their hands and feet into different weapons and tools, such as battle axes,[19] sickles,[20] cleats,[21] scythes, mallets,[22] shovels,[23] keys,[24] maces (spiked[25] or non-spiked),[26] golf clubs,[10] lances,[27] oars,[28] machetes (serrated[15] or non-serrated),[29] hammers,[30] and hooks.[15]

Osmosians can merge their hands into one.[27]

Osmosians capable of regenerating and regrowing any damaged or destroyed body parts, allowing them to grow back lost limbs.[27]

Osmosians can enlarge their arms.[31]

Osmosians can manipulate matter to fill in cracks or holes by releasing a liquid version of whatever material they have absorbed, as shown when Kevin repaired the rock ceiling of a mine.[20] They can also partially merge with the actual matter and manipulate the substance's form, as shown when Kevin fused the seal of P'andor's suit, morphed it around P'andor, and fused the arms together as makeshift handcuffs.[20]

Osmosians have the ability to spontaneously create more of a given material by absorbing it. By generating matter, Osmosians can also create objects, as shown when Kevin created a helmet to protect Sir George from Dagon's mind control.[32]

Osmosians can transfer the matter they have absorbed to another individual, as shown when Kevin transferred his metal coating to Gwen to release her from Dagon's mind control.[32]

Osmosians can also encase others in matter without shedding their own coating, as Kevin demonstrated when he coated a truck driver in asphalt.[12] They can also cover others partially instead of completely. Kevin once used the metal he absorbed to fashion a helmet for Gwen to prevent the Lucubra from controlling her.[33]

Rubber Form

An Osmosian's body becomes highly elastic when absorbing rubber. They are able to bounce wall from wall, making their movements highly unpredictable, especially in a close quarter fight.[34]

When their rubber coating is burned, a strong stench capable of incapacitating Incurseans is produced.[34]

Varsidium Form

When struck, Osmosians can amplify sonic vibrations. This was shown when Gwen hit Kevin with mana to amplify Echo Echo's sonic screams, incapacitating the DNAliens in the process.[35]

Metal Form

Osmosians are provided with immunity to radiation. Furthermore, if they absorb the material from carbon rods, they are able to regulate the radiation produced by beings such as P'andor, by absorbing excess neutrons.[20]

Osmosians resistant to high pressures in oceans, such as those on Piscciss.[11]

Stone Form

Osmosians are resistant to cold temperatures, such as those on Mikd'lty.[36]

Iron Form

Osmosians are immune to the Lucubra's mind control.[33]

Concrete Form

Osmosians are resistant to strong winds.[13]

Other Abilities

Even without using their matter absorption powers, Osmosians are stronger than an average human.[DM 5] For example, Aggregor could violently knock both Kevin and Ampfibian across a room.[37]

Osmosians are durable enough to resist impacts and blunt force trauma that would severely injure an ordinary person with moderate discomfort. For example, Aggregor survived being brutally slammed headfirst into a wall by Ra'ad.[37]

Weaknesses

Nega (85)

Cooper being fatigued after manipulating technology

Osmosians have different weaknesses depending on the individual. For example, Cooper's power of technokinesis can render him slightly unconscious, at least when he was at a young age.[38]

Any energy, DNA or powers an Osmosian absorbs will dissipate over time or through excessive use, so they are required to recharge.[7]

Whenever Osmosians absorb the DNA of other lifeforms, they only gain 1/10th of their abilities.[note 4]

Absorbing energy, DNA or powers causes Osmosians to become insane.[39][DM 8] Being drained of the energy, DNA or powers they have absorbed will restore their sanity, at the cost of making them exhausted.[40]

Depending on their self-control, emotional and mental state and number of DNA samples absorbed, an Osmosian may not be able to permanently revert from their amalgamated mutations. For example, initially, Kevin could not permanently revert from his Kevin 11 mutation,[DM 9] but eventually did so with Kwarrel's help.[41] However, he could not revert from his Ultimate Kevin mutation as he had absorbed more DNA samples[DM 10] and, as a result, had become more insane.[6]

Initially, Osmosians cannot absorb enough matter from small objects to completely coat himself, and needed a sample approximate to him in size.[42][DM 11] However, they seem to be able to overcome this problem as they grow older, and can coat their entire body with just small shard of material.[18]

Osmosians unable to use their matter absorption powers while wearing a spacesuit[43] or Plumber suit,[36][11] giving them a major disadvantage in combat.

In their metal form, Osmosians are vulnerable to electricity.[11]

In their metal form, Osmosians can be magnetized. However, they can use this to their advantage, as shown when Lodestar launched Kevin at the Mech Dragon[27] on one occasion and Zombozo on another.[44]

Osmosians can be forced to absorb matter by coming into contact with an Absorption Band.[45]

Most of an Osmosian's powers can be neutralized by energy cuffs[46] or a power dampening headband.[47]

Osmosians can be immobilized by ice, as shown when Kevin was frozen by the DNAlien Freeze Guns.[48]

Osmosians can be rendered unconscious by sedative quills, such as those generated from Argit's species.[45][49]

Osmosians are vulnerable to snake venom.[50]

Osmosians are vulnerable to strong winds, such as those generated by a Geochelone Aerios.[1]

Osmosians are vulnerable to electricity, such as that generated by an Amperi.[37]

Osmosians can be crystallized by Addwaitya's crystallizing attacks.[17]

Etymology

The name "Osmosian" comes from the word "osmosis", the process by which a solvent (e.g. water) diffuses from an area of a high concentration through a semi-permeable membrane into an area of low concentration. It is also the process by which cells absorb water and nutrients, a reference to a pre-retcon Osmosian's absorption powers.

Trivia

  • "Osmosian" was a term coined by Servantis for mutant humans.[2][DJW 6]
  • The Omnitrix cannot accept DNA from mutants (arguably including Osmosians) because they do not count as aliens.[DJW 7]
  • In his earliest appearances, Kevin was presented as having absorption powers, without being specified as a mutant.[DR 1] However, according to Derrick J. Wyatt, the creators intended for Kevin to be a mutant human,[DJW 8] with this detail persisting in merchandise released during the Original Series.[merch 1] Merchandise released during the first season of Alien Force referred to him as a human.[merch 2][merch 3] In Alien Force proper, Kevin was revealed to be a human/alien hybrid.[51] Kevin's backstory was changed in Omniverse to make things more in line with the concept of him being a mutant[DJW 9] and so not everything was derived from aliens.[DJW 10][3]
    • Osmosians were still considered aliens during the earlier part of Omniverse, with the decision to change it being made sometime after January 28, 2013.[MW 1]
  • Because of the retcon, Osmosians are extremely similar to both the Homo Superiors (a.k.a. Mutants) and the Inhumans from the Marvel Comics, as they are all subspecies of human with unique genetic components. In fact, the term Osmosian means the same thing as "mutant".[DJW 11]
    • The retcon also makes Osmosians similar to both Conduits from the Infamous video game series and certain Metahumans from DC Comics who have acquired their powers through natural causes.
  • Derrick speculated that Osmosian genes may be recessive.[DJW 12]

  • The Omnitrix, and by extension the Codon Stream, contained Osmosian DNA in its databanks.[DM 12]
  • It takes an Osmosian nearly 100 years to fully mature.[DM 13]
  • Osmosians do not generally groom or cut their hair.[DM 14]
  • Osmosians prefer savories to sweets.[MW 2]
  • Kevin is the only human-Osmosian hybrid.[DM 15]
  • Kevin did not grow horns when he got aged up by the Time Monster in Paradox because the crew had not thought of the horns yet. However, Dwayne McDuffie stated that they did come up with a reason.[DM 16]
  • The way an Osmosian's absorption powers work is very similar to those of the Marvel Comics character Absorbing Man.

  • Notes

    1. In Ultimate Alien, it was stated that Osmosians came from the planet Osmos V.[1] However, this has been changed in Omniverse, where it is revealed that Osmos V never existed because it was made up by Servantis.[2][3]
    2. In Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, Osmosians were presented a human-like alien species with absorption powers. However, this has been changed in Omniverse, where they are instead presented as a subspecies of humans with abilities that vary between individuals.[2][3]
    3. In the Original Series, absorbing energy from the Omnitrix granted Kevin the ability to transform into the aliens who were unlocked in the active playlist at the time, and he only mutated into Kevin 11 after losing control of his rage.[9] However, as of Ultimate Alien, absorbing energy from the Omnitrix or Ultimatrix causes Osmosians to immediately mutate into an amalgamated form.[3]
    4. Initially, an Osmosian's absorption ratio was proportional, as shown with Pyronite Kevin and Tetramand Kevin, while the Kevin 11 mutation held only 1/11th of a component's abilities. However, it was later established in Escape from Aggregor that Osmosians gain the fixed amount of 1/10th of a lifeform's abilities, regardless of the circumstances.[3]
