BTP:STYLE

Every article should adhere to the Manual of Style. Please read it and contact an administrator if you have any questions.

Note: All editing that will be discussed is done in the Source Editor, not the Visual Editor. To switch editors, click from the drop-down menu next to the "EDIT" button, or click the editor-switching button while editing. You can change your preferred default editing style in Special:Preferences.

General Guidelines

  • All articles must have proper spelling and grammar.
    • Do not use double spaces when writing on any page or subpage.
    • Do not put spaces on either side of slashes (/ or \).
    • Do not put empty paragraphs or sections on any page or subpage.
    • Article titles and headings should have the first word capitalized, along with every other word that isn't an article (e.g.: "the", "a/an", "and"), save for policy articles. The same applies to categories and subpages.
  • All pages must be written in American English.
  • Specific measurements should be written using imperial units, followed by the metric equivalent in parentheses.
  • With the exception of infoboxes, whole numbers from one to nine should be written in word form, while whole numbers above nine and decimal numbers should be written in numerical form.

Terminology

Abbreviations

The wiki uses the following abbreviations to shorten the name of the Ben 10 shows, movies and specials. Abbreviations should only be used in infoboxes as captions for subject appearances, or in file names. Do not use abbreviations on the main body of any page, except in cases where series master briefs are cited (e.g. "AF Brief" to represent the Alien Force series master brief).

  • Original Series: OS
  • Alien Force: AF
  • Ultimate Alien: UA
  • Alien Force and Ultimate Alien (when describing the era as a whole): UAF
  • Omniverse: OV
  • Reboot: RB
  • Secret of the Omnitrix: SOTO
  • Race Against Time: RAT
  • Alien Swarm: AS
  • Destroy All Aliens: DAA
  • Heroes United: HU
  • Versus the Universe: VtU

Ben 10-Specific Language

  • The word "grandpa" should only be capitalized when used as a proper name (e.g. "Hey, Grandpa!"; "It's Grandpa Max!"), and not when used as a possessive noun (e.g. "This is my grandpa."; "Your grandpa Max.").
  • When using an Omnitrix, the expressions to indicate each step would be:
    • "activate" ; "turn on" ; "prime"
    • "select" (through) ; "scroll through"; "cycle through" ; "dial in"
    • "slam down" ; "smack down"
    • "transform (into)" ; "turn into" ; "become"
    • "time out"
    • "detransform" ; "revert"

Omnitrix Anatomy

All the components of the Omnitrix (or the watch) from the bottom to the top:

  • The band is what wraps around the user's arm. In the case of longer bands, such as on Ben 10,000's or any Ultimatrix, "gauntlet" would be a better substitute.
  • The activation button is usually located on the band. Ben's Omnitrix from Omniverse features a touchpad as a means of activation.
  • Once activated, the Omnitrix's central cylindrical core will pop up.
  • The tip of the core always has a faceplate or dial.
  • When selecting aliens, the Original Series featured silhouettes within a diamond; Alien Force and Ultimate Alien featured holograms; and Omniverse featured icons on an icon wheel.
  • When in alien form, the Omnitrix appears as an Omnitrix symbol.

Linking

Links

  • Links should be to the subpages themselves, rather than to a redirect or to a disambiguation page, if the subject has appeared in both the Reboot and Classic continuities.
  • The display text of the link must indicate clearly the article being linked to. For example, in "...the Pelarotas must contend with a crowd of the most obtrusive tourists in the Omniverse", 'tourists' should not be a link, since it is not clear which article it leads to.
  • A single word may only link to a single article. A word cannot be broken up into multiple pieces that link to separate articles. For example, "Omnitrix", where the 'Omni' and 'trix' parts link to separate articles, is forbidden.
  • When linking to pages as a possessive noun or in the plural form (e.g. "Ben's" or "Bens"), the "s" should be placed outside of the closing brackets.

Overlinking

Links to any specific page should only appear once per section.

Italicizing and Bolding

Links to or names of episodes, games, DVDs and books should be italicized, links to series articles, names of series and links to franchises should be bolded, and links to movie articles should be italicized and bolded. The same rules apply to non-Ben 10 media. All other links should not have any sort of emphasis.

Citations

It is important to add citations for statements. If you are unsure if a particular statement needs a citation, you may ask an admin for a second opinion.

  • For primary sources (e.g. in-series content), add "<ref>link to the source</ref>" tags next to where the citation is made.
    • If a source is cited multiple times, add "<ref name="ABC">link to the source</ref>" in the first instance and "<ref name="ABC"/>" in all following instances, where ABC is an arbitrary name for the reference, typically an abbreviation of the episode/movie title.
  • For other sources (crew statements, pop-up trivia and merchandise), add "{{Refn|link to the source|group = XYZ}}", where XYZ is "pop-up", "merch" or "AC" (for pop-up trivia, merchandise and audio commentary (such as interviews), respectively) or the initials of the crew member. Do not use nicknames to refer to crew members.
    • If a source is cited multiple times, add "{{Refn|link to the source|group = XYZ|name = ABC}}" in the first instance and "{{Refn|group = XYZ|name = ABC}}" in all following instances, where ABC is an arbitrary name for the reference.
    • Pop-up trivia should be cited immediately before the episode/movie in which the trivia was shown, as follows: "{{Refn|link to the source|group = XYZ}}<ref>link to the source</ref>".
  • If a citation to a single reference requires multiple file attachments, add the name, followed by links to each file, as follows: "{{Refn|Source Name; files 1, 2, 3|group = XYZ}}".
  • If a statement is supported by primary and other types of sources, primary sources should take precedence, as follows: "<ref>link to the source</ref>{{Refn|link to the source|group = XYZ}}"
  • Click here for a guide on how to add screenshots of crew statements to the wiki.
  • If you find an unsourced statement on a page but cannot remember the source yourself, type the following: "{{Cite|Statement here}}". Another user will add a citation later.

Articles

Content

Templates

  • All articles must have a relevant continuity template. A list of continuity templates can be found here.
    • There should only be one continuity template on an article. Please refer to an admin if you are unsure which template goes there or think if more than one is required.
    • Gallery, category, disambiguation and special pages should not contain continuity template.
    • Some continuity templates may also act as disambiguation notices, linking to alternate counterparts of the subject of the article.
  • Non-canon articles have their own templates, in place of the usual continuity templates.
  • If a specific section is too short but the rest of the article has enough content, add the "PartStub" template to the beginning of the section.
  • Add the relevant navigation template (also known as a navbox) to the bottom of the page. A list of navboxes can be found here.
    • Typically, only one navbox is necessary for an article, but there may be exceptions. For example, Gravattack has both the "Transformations" and "Celestial Bodies" navboxes due to being both a transformation and a celestial body (a planet, in this case).

Ordering of the templates at the beginning of the page goes as follows:

  1. Continuity Template
  2. Disambiguation Notice (if applicable)
  3. Stub (if applicable)
  4. Cleanup (if applicable)

Infobox

All regular pages must have an infobox. Below are the fields contained in each type of infobox. A list of infoboxes can be found here.

Keep in mind:

  • Some fields may be left empty if no there is no relevant information.
  • If a section has more than 10 items, add a scrollbar, as follows: "{{Scroll|Items}}".
  • Parentheses should be written in small font, as follows: "<small>(example)</small>".

  • Quotes

A quote may be added right before the lead section or at the beginning of other sections on the page, such as:

    • Personality
    • Powers and Abilities
    • Weaknesses

Do not add quotes to the beginning of episode, movie or video game pages. Note the following guidelines for selecting a quote:

    • The subject of the quote must be the subject of the article. Who says the dialogue is not relevant.
    • The quote must reflect the subject of the article. It may be a direct description of the subject's origin or powers, or some comment that reflects the character's personality, but the main focus of the quote must be the subject itself.
    • The quote must be positive and upbeat, that is, it must highlight the subject's strengths, qualities or personality (whether inherently good or bad) or be a catchphrase or a funny quip which is also descriptive of the subject. It must not discuss weaknesses or criticisms.
    • Ensure that the quote is not just random dialogue, but something that is meaningful to the subject and adds to the quality of the article.

Add a quote by typing the following:

    {{Quote|Dialogue Here|Speaker}}

To add a quote with multiple lines of dialogue, add quotation marks at the beginning and end of every line, and a line break (<br>) after every line.

    When adding quotes:

    • Link to the speaker's page in the "Speaker" section of the quote template, if they are not the subject of the article.
    • If there are multiple speakers, make the identity of each speaker clear.
    • In some cases, you may add additional context to the "Speaker" section.
    • Add a citation to the episode/movie in which the dialogue was spoken.

    Some examples of good quotes:

I am Charmcaster! Daughter of Spellbinder, conqueror of Addwaitya, ruler of Legerdomain, and I will not be denied-

    – Charmcaster before being teleported away by Zs'Skayr.

The above quote not only describes Charmcaster very well, but also displays her vanity, an important personality trait of hers.

No magic. Just my natural magnetism.

    – Lodestar before defeating Urien.

This quote is a funny quip from Lodestar that also makes a pun on his powers, making it a good addition to the page.

    Some examples of bad quotes:

Light may hurt me, but it destroys you, Ectonurite.

    – Lord Transyl to Zs'Skayr.

The above quote is not a good choice for Lord Transyl. This is because its subject is Ectonurites' vulnerability to light. While it gives information on Vladats, it is not particular to Transyl nor is he the focus of the quote. Moreover, it is showcasing a weakness.

Oh, yeah? I don't think you've been introduced to Cannonbolt!

    – Cannonbolt to Kevin.

This quote has Cannonbolt as its subject, but it doesn't give any meaningful information about Cannonbolt's powers or personality, or anything at all. Hence it is not ideal.

If you are unable to find a suitable quote for an article, it would be preferable to leave the article without one.

    Lead Section

The lead section of every article should start with the title of the article in bold and a short sentence(s) related to it (e.g.: "Way Big is the Omnitrix's DNA sample of a To'kustar.")

    • The lead section should be short and precise. Long descriptions and/or history of the subject should not be mentioned in the lead section.
    • The purpose of the lead section is to directly explain what the subject of the article is. Statements like "X first appeared in XYZ" should be avoided unless accompanied by information on what X is.
    • Alternate versions of characters' lead section should not be "X is the Dimension/Timeline Y equivalent of Z". Information on their main counterpart is covered in special continuity templates. The lead section should describe X.

    Main Sections

These are the main sections on each type of page, ordered exactly as they should appear. Some sections may be removed if no there is no relevant information.

    Trivia
    • The Trivia section should have curiosities regarding the article (e.g.: "This episode aired on the fifth-year anniversary of Ben 10.") and not pointless information regarding random events (e.g.: "This is the third time Ben turned into X after turning into Y.")
    • Trivia must follow the order below.
      • In-series facts
      • Observations (for example, "X, Y and Z are the only aliens to have been removed from the Omnitrix")
      • Crew statements on in-universe facts
      • Pop-up trivia or merchandise facts
      • Production-related trivia
      • Alternate story ideas by the crew that didn't make it into the show and were left in production
      • Connections to non-Ben 10 media
      • Similarities to elements in non-Ben 10 media
        • When listing similarities between, for example, a Ben 10 character and a non-Ben 10 character, make sure the similarities are meaningful and not superficial.
      • Personal opinions of crew members
    • Trivia points within each group above should be ordered chronologically, if possible.
    Notes

Foot notes should be used to elaborate on inconsistencies, misconceptions, or conflicting crew statements (e.g.: Alien X's omnipotence/lack thereof) that cannot be properly explained within the main body of the article.

    References

The references section should have links to any external or internal references made on the page.

In the references section, a separate template: {{Reflist|group = XYZ}} must be added.

After the references to in-series content, create subsections for other types of sources, such as crew members or pop-up trivia, following the order they are cited on the main body of the page. If only one crew member is cited on the page alongside other types of sources or if only crew statements are cited on the page, the "Crew Statements" subheading is not needed, and the crew member(s) can be listed on their own without a parent subheading.

    Categories

Galleries should only have gallery-related categories (e.g.: "Galleries", "Episode Galleries") and not categories belonging to the main article (e.g.: "Characters", "Aliens").

    Text

Galleries should not have any text whatsoever, except in the form of captions and sections.

    User Pages

    Templates

User pages should not have templates that automatically add non-user categories to them. They will be removed when found. If the user wants to apply an infobox to their page, they must use only the {{Userinfobox}} template.

    Categories

All user pages must have the category "Users" added to them and, if necessary, additional categories regarding that user's position, with the only exception being Fandom staff.
