Being a hero isn't about others knowing you did something good, it's about you knowing you did something good. Being a hero is its own reward.

– Max to Ben.[15]

Magister Maxwell "Max" Tennyson[16][17] is Ken, Gwen and Ben's paternal grandfather. Max is widely considered the greatest Plumber in the Milky Way,[18][19] and is currently Magister of Earth.

Appearance[]

Regular Appearances[]

In the Original Series, Max wore a white shirt, covered by a red buttoned-up Hawaiian shirt with a floral design. He had grey hair and blue pants, as well as brown shoes.

In Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, Max's appearance did not change except for his blue pants being changed to brown, he had more wrinkles, a slightly darker shirt, and whiter hair. He wore black shoes.

In Omniverse, Max's appearance has not changed that much except for his brown pants, which are now white. He has whiter hair, more wrinkles, and his eyes have been changed to little black dashes. His white shirt that he wore under his red button up shirt has changed to black. Also, his shoes are now grey at the top and black at the bottom.

Occasional Appearances[]

In the Original Series, his pajamas were blue and had yellow lightning streaks.

While in the hospital in The Alliance, he wore a light blue hospital gown, with a cast around his left leg, bandages around his head and a band-aid on his left cheek.

In Dr. Animo and the Mutant Ray, he wore an orange life jacket.

As a Lepidopterran hybrid in the same episode, he had a maggot-like body with green skin and six legs. He had four eye stalks with orange eyes and grey hair.

In Divided We Stand, he wore his regular shirt, brown shorts and brown strap sandals. He also wore goggles and later, a jetpack.

In Don't Drink the Water, Max briefly wore a pair of glasses.

After being turned into a 10-year-old in Don't Drink the Water, Max's hair was similar to a crew cut, and he looked skinny. He initially wore his own clothes, then switched to Ben's clothes.

In Big Fat Alien Wedding, during the wedding ceremony, he wore a black tuxedo.

In Ben 10 vs. Negative 10: Part 2, he wore a grey exo-suit with blue markings on its visor. He later wore a visor.

In Something Zombozo This Way Comes, as a Zombie Clown, Max had white makeup, red lipstick, a red nose and different hair.

Personality[]

Max should have been like us. He had a spark all his own. An adventurer, troublemaker-

Verdona.[6]

An easy-going, kind, and normally jovial man, Max often comes across as pleasantly absent-minded at times, but is actually quite perceptive. For instance, he knew early on in Ben's adventures who was most likely pursuing him.[20]

Max is a very brave man, having dedicated his life to preserve peace on Earth between humans and extraterrestrial life. He regularly focuses on saving the lives of citizens caught up in Ben's fights with villains, and did so even while maintaining his secret life as a Plumber and not having access to Plumber weapons. His bravery has resulted in him being injured;[20][21] having his DNA spliced;[1] nearly killed in several dozen ways; and more.

Max is also brave and adventurous in the culinary world, and often has an appetite for foods considered weird or gross, both from Earth and beyond. This comes from his travels across the globe and galaxy.[pop-up 1][22]

Though well-meaning, Max is not without a stern side, having sometimes struggled to guide Ben during his grandson's possession of the first Omnitrix, and having fights with Ben on rare occasion.[23] He acts stern out of love, but can also act out of conviction. He is not afraid to call people out, no matter who they are, on their selfishness and mistakes.[24]

One of Max's few faults is that when personal threats from his past resurface, he tends to not think clearly[25] and acts more self-propelling, to the point of omitting information from those trying to help him, family included.[26][4][27]

Max spent his childhood summers on his Uncle Jedediah's farm, where he learned about the merits of hard work.[14]

Max, under the effects of Zombozo's happiness-draining, mentioned having been afraid of heights as a kid and to beat his fear he climbed up to the top of the water tower and "scared the fear" right out of him.[28]

Max has a childhood friend named Donovan Grand Smith,[29] who says that Max always worried and was never a risk-taker like him. 30 years earlier, Donovan and Max had both been broke when Donovan offered Max a business opportunity, which he turned down. Max later became a Plumber (most people thought Max was just a regular plumber), establishing that Max's career as a Plumber lasted for about 28 years before he retired (Max mentioned that after 28 years on the job, he'd never figured out who was behind the Bermuda Triangle).

Young Max and Verdona

In Moonstruck, Max revealed his past where he first met Verdona. When he was about 17, he was a First Lieutenant and pilot in the Air Force. During a mission, he saw and followed a spaceship. He blasted it, but the spaceship got away and Max's plane crashed. He talked to the commander about the spaceship, which made him an astronaut and gave him a mission to be the first man on the Moon. While at a diner, he met Verdona in her human form and fell in love with her. Suddenly, a humanoid robot came and attacked Verdona. Max saved her and left to a faraway desert where the robot couldn't find them. Verdona explained to Max that she is not from Earth, she is from another planet. The robot that chased them was a sentient robot called a Synthroid and had left a bracelet on Verdona's wrist, which made her unable to do most her powers, save for her telepathy. She revealed to Max that she was the one in the spaceship he saw before she read Max's mind. She told him that their minds were now linked. She also revealed that the Synthroid wanted her to be a battery-like energy source for their planet (since she is an energy being). The Synthroid came back and kidnapped Verdona, but Max used his mind to locate Verdona (since Verdona had said their minds were now linked). He (with some help from Magister Labrid) saved Verdona and destroyed the Synthroid. The bracelet that prevented Verdona from using her manna powers fell off. Revealing her true form, she asked Max whether he would go with her back to Anodyne. However, Max declined, and with a kiss, they parted.

The Monday after he met Verdona, Max went into the astronaut training program. Max would have been the first man on the moon, but he left NASA prior to Apollo 11[17] as he was recruited into the Plumbers by Magister Labrid.[9] In his own words, he just "took his step for mankind in other ways". Shortly after, it was revealed that he did in fact go into space, just not with NASA.[17]

While in the Plumbers, Max befriended Wes Green, a Plumber in the extradimensional control division.[pop-up 2][30] At one point, the two sent a Yeti in the Himalayas back to its home dimension.[pop-up 3][30] Max met Wes' granddaughter, Kai Green, when she was around toddler age.[30]

Max went to the moon three times and stayed at a secret lunar Plumber base.[pop-up 4][17]

Max went up against Vilgax several times in the late 60's and early 70's.[pop-up 5][4]

Max retired from the Plumbers in his late 50's.[DM 3]

After Sheelane crash-landed on Earth, Max helped Mr. Baumann get her and her ship to an underground lake.[31]

Max was a retired Plumber, who took his grandchildren Ben and Gwen on a cross-country trip, during which Ben discovers an alien watch, the Omnitrix.

During their adventures, Ben and Gwen questioned Max's uncanny knowledge, and the fact he didn't seem to be bothered by all the weirdness they encountered. It was eventually revealed in Secrets that Max and the alien warlord Vilgax were old enemies.

In Truth, Max revealed he was part of an intergalactic police force known as the Plumbers, and that he fought and defeated Vilgax years before. During the episode, he met his old partner Phil Billings. He discovered that Phil stole the Null Void Projector, using it to make easy money, by freeing the aliens who the Plumbers had already captured, then fighting and catching them for profit.

In the episode Perfect Day, Max was given superpowers by Ultra Ben in Ben's dream. As Ultra Grandpa he had enhanced strength and was able to fly.

In A Jolt From the Past, both 11-year-old Ben had just defeated the Nosedeenians using Feedback. Max arrived with rubber blankets, saying how he was glad that Ben still needed them.

In Trouble Helix, Max went along with Ben and Gwen to Galvan Prime to tell Azmuth about a malfunction in the Omnitrix which trapped Ben as a different alien every week. Azmuth told Max to come back in two years to which angered him. Azmuth then decided to fix the Omnitrix after Ben (as XLR8) started messing with his inventions. Max then told the kids to wait outside while he talked with Azmuth. Max was seen later who tried to help in taking down Malware and rescue Albedo. The plan nearly fell through as Albedo had tampered with the Helix trying to destroy Malware rather than save him, which changed Malware's form.

In Malefactor, Max brought Ben and Gwen to Mt. Rushmore and showed them the smuggled Psycholeopterran. The alarm suddenly went off and Max, Ben, and Gwen went off to find the source of the problem. It turned out to be Malware's doing and Ben proceeded to fight him, but the Omnitrix timed out. Max then blasted Malware with a Tachyon Cannon but Malware absorbed the weapon. Max watched as Ben continued to fight Malware as Feedback but then Malware left saying he already had what he came for.

In Of Predators and Prey: Part 2, Max drove the Rustbucket 2 into Terroranchula but it just pushed him aside. Ben managed to fight the creature as Feedback but both the Omnitrix and the Nemetrix timed out and the creature turned out to be none other than Phil. Max watched as Phil was suddenly transported away.

In Showdown: Part 1, Max, along with Gwen and Azmuth, held an intervention for Ben to convince him to stop overusing Feedback. Ben, greatly upset, left the Rustbucket without saying much.

In Ben Again, Max was confused with the sudden mind change between 11-year-old and 16-year-old Ben. Max soon learned from Professor Paradox that it was Eon's doing and he watched as the Bens used Clockwork to make everything right again.

In Ben 10 Returns: Part 1, he left a holographic message for Ben, stating that he was investigating renewed alien activity on Earth and claims that he had the Omnitrix.

In Max Out, Max destroyed a Xenocite hatchery by detonating a Null Void Projector, which, after removing its focusing lens, made a "pretty good imitation of a hand grenade" and produced an explosion that covered over half a mile. Max appeared to have been killed in the blast but was instead sent to the Null Void, where he, calling himself "the Wrench", fought Dr. Animo, who was calling himself "D'Void".

Max appeared in War of the Worlds: Part 1 and Part 2 to aid Ben in his battle with the Highbreed, along with the Plumbers' Helpers. After the Highbreed left Earth, he took the Helpers under his wing as his apprentices.

Max and the Plumbers' Helpers appeared in Vengeance of Vilgax: Part 1 and Part 2. They helped fight Vilgax but were all beaten by him. After Ben beat Vilgax, he tells his old nemesis to never return.

In If All Else Fails, it was revealed that the Highbreed had infected Max with a dormant seed, which was part of a failsafe plan of the Highbreed. It is mistakenly activated by a Highbreed officer, who was unaware that the Highbreed had called off the war. Max was freed from the seeds' control by Ben, Gwen, and Kevin.

In Above and Beyond, Max set up a scenario in which Ben was to go on a rampage on board an orbiting Plumbers' Research Satellite Delta. He then called the Plumbers' Helpers to come and save him. They managed to defeat Ben, but the battle had caused the space station to fall out of orbit towards the city of London. The Plumbers' Helpers decided to activate the station's self-destruct, which would mean sacrificing their lives in the process. However, the space station didn't explode. Instead, Max appeared along with Ben, who revealed to the Plumbers' Helpers that the space station was a Plumber training facility and that Ben's "rampage" was set up to test them. Max also stated that by putting "the safety of others ahead of their own lives", the Helpers would be admitted to Plumbers' Academy.

In The Final Battle: Part 1 and Part 2, Max took part in the fight against Vilgax. When Kevin returned to his human form, Max stated that the Omnitrix kept him in his mutated form. Max aided Gwen in trying to stop the ship from crashing into Bellwood. After Ben escaped from Vilgax, he, Gwen, and Kevin shared a group hug with Max.

In Hit 'Em Where They Live, it was revealed that Max had been protecting the Tennyson family from being attacked by Ben's old enemies (due to Ben's secret being revealed to the world). However, he was injured while protecting Sandra from SevenSeven and was forced to inform Ben and his team of the problem.

Max appeared again in Ultimate Aggregor, where he helped Ben, Gwen, and Kevin stop Aggregor.

In Map of Infinity, Ultimate Aggregor's electrical shock damaged his entire nervous system and had to be replaced. Azmuth brought him, along with Ben and his team to Galvan Mark II, where Max was placed in a tube that would repair his nervous system after a few weeks.

Max returned in Absolute Power: Part 1 and Part 2 with his nervous system having been fully restored and helped Ben and Gwen stop Ultimate Kevin.

Max appeared in Prisoner Number 775 is Missing, where he was furious when he learned of alien prisoners being held in Area 51 illegally and as a result had gotten into a major disagreement with Colonel Rozum.

In Of Predators and Prey: Part 1, Max was seen early in the episode trying to catch a Quartilloptus. Rook aided Max in capturing the alien and Max revealed that he was using the alien in a dish that he and Rook love to eat. Ben informed Max that something was after him and Max asked what Ben should do.

In Of Predators and Prey: Part 2, Max appeared briefly at the end of the episode where he rescued Ben and Rook after they escaped from the explosion of Khyber's ship.

In Outbreak, Max watched as Rook trained with Ben who was using Wildvine. Rook was defeated by Ben who transformed into Humungousaur. Max told Ben that he needed to learn how to defeat his opponents without using the Omnitrix all the time.

GF (609)

Max fighting a Mechaneer

In Gone Fishin', Max appeared along with Ben, Rook, and Magister Patelliday, who were all going fishing. Everything was going well until large, mechanical robots called Mechaneers captured Patelliday and surrounded the group. Ben managed to defeat the robots as Juryrigg and the three headed to the Mechaneers' headquarters. Max also mentioned that Patelliday can handle himself while he watched Ben defeat Captain Kork. Rook then pressed a button, releasing all of the boats that were trapped by Kork.

Max appeared briefly in Blukic and Driba Go to Mr. Smoothy's where he tried to contact help in order to help stop Trombipulor.

In Arrested Development, Max helped take Billy Billions into custody. When Billions complained about Ben taking his credit for saving the world, Max responded by telling Billions to act his age and throws Billions in the Plumber's truck.

In Showdown: Part 2, Max spoke to an angry Pakmar who demanded an apology from Ben for ruining all of his businesses. Max tried to get Ben but noticed that Ben wasn't even on Earth anymore. Max later rescued Ben, Rook, and Azmuth from Malware on Galvan Prime. Max explained that he knew something was wrong when he couldn't find Ben on Earth and recruited Gwen to locate Ben on Galvan Prime. Max then went along with Blukic and Driba to try and fix the firewall to prevent Malware from reaching the core and fully taking over Galvan Prime. Max had to give up his belt buckle and his shoelaces in order for Blukic and Driba to fix the firewall which they successfully did. Max was seen again with his pants still down flying back to Earth along with Ben and the group.

In Ben Again, Max was confused with the sudden mind change between 11-year-old and 16-year-old Ben. Max soon learned from Professor Paradox that it was Eon's doing and he watched as the Bens used Clockwork to make everything right again.

In Store 23, Max chased Liam with Ben. Liam escaped Max but Ben kept up with him as Feedback. Max urgec Ben not to use Feedback as there were other aliens in the area but Ben didn't listen and defeated Liam. Max scolded at Ben for not listening to him and Ben stormed off. Max was seen again at the end of the episode, still angry at Ben for running off earlier. Ben suddenly hugged Max, to Max's pleasant surprise.

Powers and Abilities[]

Max is skilled in using a variety of Plumber tools and weaponry.[26][3][32][11][33] He also has experience with some alien tech, such as Transporter Discs.[34]

Max is proficient at driving. For example, when being chased by the Mechadroids, he was able to repeatedly swerve the Rustbucket out of the way to avoid their lasers.[26]

Before joining the Plumbers, Max was a United States Air Force pilot. As such, he was an expert at flying an F-104 Starfighter, which included dogfighting, as he was able to pursue and shoot down an alien spacecraft;[9] and he can sufficiently pilot both helicopters[4] and Earth spaceships.[35] He has also been shown to pilot alien spacecraft proficiently, such as Vilgax's ship[19] and the Skipper.[36]

Max is a skilled street fighter and has been shown to hold his own against beings with powers.[2] He is also a seasoned strategist; skilled at using the objects in his environment to gain an advantage in a fight.[37][38]

Max has enhanced strength. For example, he can swing a metal pole attached to concrete[39] and lift a big alien fish.[13]

Despite his age, Max has incredible reflexes. He frequently dodges enemy attacks,[40] including a blast of electricity from Yetta;[41] once perfectly parried a series of laser beams from the Great One's zealot;[37] and could keep up with and outfight a DNAlien[42] and Arachnachimp[43] during each's respective surprise attack.

Due to his age, and the particularly adventurous life he has lived, Max has collected a wide array of general knowledge and skills. Most notably, he is a decent mechanic: sometimes able to patch up and repair the Rustbucket during emergency stops,[44][4] and was able to fix a broken jetpack.[45] He has knowledge on cooking;[46] farming;[14] sleuthing;[47] camping and emergency survival.[48] He knows a recipe for a Chinese cold remedy;[40] a technique to instantly subdue mad dogs;[47] and how to work a nuclear reactor.[40]

While under the identity of the Wrench in the Null Void, Max used a staff capable of producing electricity.[2]

Max had a Nuclear Fusion Grenade, which he used to destroy the Hyperspace Jump Gate.[60]

Max temporarily used a Galvan Jetpack while on Galvan Prime.[10]

Weaknesses[]

Max is far from the athlete he was during his Plumber days, now being a senior citizen, and not having managed to keep in shape. As such, while he has retained some athletics, he now has low stamina, and easily tires out in chases.[47][61][62]

Max is vulnerable to being possessed by an Ectonurite.[63]

Carl Tennyson[]

Carl was skeptical of Max's Plumber life since childhood, but later grew to accept it after seeing how Ben risked his life to be a hero himself.[57]

Gwen Tennyson[]

Between Ben and Gwen, Max appears to trust Gwen slightly more, as she was put in charge of watching the former during the team's visit to Galvan Prime.[49]

When Gwen thought Max had died after detonating the Null Void Projector,[42] she expressed deep sadness, as seen when she did not play games with Ben and Kevin when they visited Max's old fishing spot.[6]

Gwen keeps a framed picture of Max in her bedroom.[66]

Ben Tennyson[]

S23 (625)

Ben hugging Max

In the Original Series, Ben's relationship with Max seemed to be that of a father and son, because the majority of the series took place in the summer and Max was the only guardian available. When he was seriously injured in The Alliance, Ben went full strength with Four Arms and brutally destroyed Vilgax's Mechadroids as they were the catalyst for his injury.[20] His relationship with his grandfather has not changed much at all during Alien Force, Ultimate Alien, and Omniverse.

Allies[]

Rook Blonko[]

Rook and Max

At first, the relationship between Max and Rook was entirely a professional one. But over time, they developed a friendly bond. They communicate with each other freely and respect each other.[67]

Rook appreciates and enjoys Max's cooking, much to Max's joy.[68]

When Max thought that Rook and Ben died while battling the Incurseans, he was enraged and tried to avenge them.[36]

Rook reminds Max of Ben.[67]

Max was also the one who promoted Rook to Magister.[41]

Love Interests[]

Xylene[]

During Xylene's early years, she met Max, who at the time was a Plumber. She wanted Max to go to Ringa Morr with her, but Max declined, saying he had to defeat Vilgax.

When Xylene awoke from her sleeping pod on Earth, Max again declined to go with her, saying that Ben and Gwen were his world.

Trivia[]

  • Max was supposed to get the Omnitrix, but when Ben found it, his DNA was close enough to Max's that it attached itself to his wrist instead.[18][19]
    • If Max had used the Omnitrix from the start, the Rooters would not consider him a threat.[DJW 2]
  • Max has presbyopia, and requires glasses to read text up close.[62]
  • Max has been the subject of several running gags throughout the franchise:
    • Most humans (especially Ben, Gwen,[22] and Kevin)[69] find his cooking to be disgusting, while aliens such as Xylene[70] and Rook[68] cannot get enough of the alien cuisine.
    • Background characters are shown wearing shirts identical to Max's.
  • Max was similar to Kevin when he was Kevin's age.[71][6] For example, in Moonstruck, Teen Max said "Hey! Watch the paint job!" and "My ride!", both of which have been said by Kevin.
  • Max has stock car driving experience.[61]
  • Max was a Magister for at least five years.[72]
  • Max previously thought Gwen's powers were magic. He did not realize it was Gwen's inheritance any more than her parents did.[DM 4]
  • Max's favorite color is either pale green or magenta.[MW 2]
  • Max once worked with the Saturdays[73] on The Bellwood Experiment, a secret project.[MW 3]
  • Max was the youngest astronaut in NASA history before being recruited by the Plumbers.[pop-up 6][17]
  • Max's lucky Hawaiian shirt was given to him by Gwen's older brother, Ken.[pop-up 7][51]
  • Max's design in the Original Series was created primarily by David Williams[DW 1] with some help from Dave Johnson, while his Alien Force and Ultimate Alien one was created by Glenn Wong.[GW 1] Overall, his design is based on the costume worn by Shazam from DC Comics, right down to his open shirt forming a lightning bolt and the colors of his shirt mimicking Shazam's cape.[DJ 1]
    • In Omniverse, Max's eyes are a reference to Shazam[DJW 3] whereas his flashback design from Blukic and Driba Go to Area 51 was inspired by Shazam's alter ago Billy Batson.[DJW 4]
    • The lightning bolt pattern on Max's pajamas in the Original Series is also a reference to Shazam.
  • In the early stages of production of the Original Series:
  • There is no counterpart of Max in the Generator Rex Dimension[DR 1][74]
  • In Dimension 23, Max died before the Omnitrix reached Earth, leaving Ben 23 with no mentor or moral support until Azmuth 23 took up that position.[75]
    • Similarly, a missing Max is generally the case for Ben Tennysons that turn out evil, such as Mad Ben.[DJW 5]
  • Thomas N. Perkins IV believes that Max's height in the Original Series was nearly six feet.[TNP 1]
  • Max's voice actor, Paul Eiding, likes that Max is more involved in Omniverse.[PE 1]

Notes[]

  1. Although Max and Verdona were married at some point,[script 1][CN 1] it is unknown if they are still married.[MW 1][DJW 1] Correlating with this, Dwayne McDuffie believed that Max has been married twice.[DM 1][DM 2]
