I'm not evil, I'm nuanced.

– Kevin to 10-year-old Ben.[8]

Kevin Ethan Levin[9] is an Osmosian and a member of Ben's Team. When Kevin first appeared in the Original Series, he quickly became one of Ben's most notable enemies. However, he reformed in Alien Force, and became one of the main heroes of the franchise, until his departure with Gwen in The More Things Change: Part 1.

Appearance

Regular Appearances

In the Original Series, Kevin was a thin and scrawny boy with shoulder-length black hair, pale skin, and dark brown eyes with black-discolored marks around them (a sign that Kevin has recently absorbed energy).[10] He wore a torn black T-shirt, black studded armbands, brown cargo pants, black boots, and a padlock necklace which is a spoil from his first crime: stealing a bike and using it to run away to New York. After absorbing an Omnitrix feedback, Kevin was able to transform into exact copies of all of the unlocked aliens, missing an Omnitrix symbol.

In Alien Force, Kevin grew into a tall and muscular young man. His eyes lacked the black marks (as his body fully recovered from and stopped absorbing energy). His normal attire in Seasons 1 and 2, as well as Ultimate Alien, was a tight black T-shirt over a grey long sleeve shirt, blue pants, and black combat shoes. His hair, although still long, was styled into a choppy mullet.

In Season 3 of Alien Force, he wore a short-sleeved light blue oil-stained mechanic's jacket over a white muscular shirt, blue pants, and his black combat shoes. After he went through a second mutation, an unbalanced mixture of various matters, the transformation completely destroyed his clothes, except his briefs. As a result, Kevin had to wear an ID Mask in public to appear human. In his second mutation, he looked like a mixture of solid materials such as stone, wood, Taydenite, and metal.

In Ultimate Alien, he wore a standard Plumber suit during a few of his off-world excursions.

In Omniverse, Kevin wore the same black shirt but the sleeves and collar were roughly cut, his grey shirt has stripes, the sleeves on his long-sleeved grey shirt were slightly torn and he wore blue holsters. His hair was longer and straighter, and his pants had a small tear below the left knee. He also wore a padlock necklace similar to the one he wore when he was 11, but marked with an "11". He also sported black marks around his eyes, making him appear tired; these marks bear similarity to when he was 11 and still absorbing energy.

In Weapon XI: Part 2, Kevin gets the same cross-shaped scar to his chin that future Kevin has.

12-year-old Kevin in Omniverse looks exactly the same as how he does in the Original Series, except for the fact that the color of his cargo pants are grey instead of brown and his padlock necklace is marked with an "11".

Occasional Appearances

In Everybody Talks About the Weather, he wore a green jacket.

In What Are Little Girls Made Of?, he wore grey trunks as a swimsuit.

In Save the Last Dance, he wore a black tuxedo with a black bow tie.

In Birds of a Feather, when on the Moon, he wore an orange spacesuit with four arms.

In the beginning of Alien Swarm, he wore a dark grey jacket over his regular attire. While investigating Ship-It, he wore a beanie with this outfit. Later in the movie, when revealing the DX Mark 10 to Ben, Gwen and Elena, he wore a short-sleeved bluish black mechanic's jacket with a white name tag that had "Kev" on it.

In the flashback in ...Nor Iron Bars a Cage, 11-year-old Kevin looked the same as he did in the Original Series, but with blue jorts instead of brown pants.

In Escape from Aggregor, he wore a pale blue winter coat and blue pants.

In Basic Training, while at the barracks in the Plumbers' Academy, he wore an olive tank top and black shorts.

In The Perfect Girlfriend, while stalking Elena disguised as Julie, he wore the green jacket he wore in Everybody Talks About the Weather and blue-tinted glasses.

In Inspector #13, Kevin wore an Ultimatrix symbol on his chest.

In The More Things Change: Part 1, Kevin lacked the stripes on his shirt and the chin whiskers he has in the rest of the series.

While working with the Rooters, he wore black Proto-Tech Armor.

Personality

Due to a complicated childhood and having supernatural abilities at a young age, Kevin exhibited psychopathic tendencies and was willing to hurt/kill anyone for his personal gain. This mentality stemmed from being treated like a 'freak' by his peers and family, and was only exacerbated by the negative mental side effects he experienced whenever he absorbed too much energy. This caused Kevin to live with many insecurities about himself; he would embrace his 'freak' title while also being paranoid of other people using it against him. His paranoia progressed to the point of considering everyone to be his enemy because, as he put it, "Nobody's innocent! They just haven't had the chance to make fun of me yet!".[11] Kevin thus rejected society at a young age, and would commit various crimes and acts of violence against innocents. One telling instance of his cruelty was when he attempted to ram a money train into another train carrying passengers, and simply parroted the phrase "no pain, no gain" at the thought of all the innocent lives that would be lost.[10]

Kevin's outlook began to change when he met Kwarrel, a fellow prisoner in the Null Void Incarcecon. Becoming somewhat of a mentor and father-figure to him, Kwarrel helped improve Kevin's anger issues and ultimately sacrificed his life to protect him. Kwarrel's influence undoubtedly helped change Kevin's personality for the better.[12] Kevin would later want to become a hero of sorts (which was later manipulated by the Rooters' leader Servantis to further his own goal).[1]

By Alien Force (and onward), Kevin had changed significantly. Despite having become a con artist and an arms broker, he was much more stable, having developed a mature yet snarky and lax personality. No longer so angry, he drops his big rivalry with Ben (what was previously so important to him) and works with him and Gwen to honor the dying words of Magister Labrid. Though Kevin was initially untrusting of them, he befriends Ben and falls in love with Gwen during the time they spend together, growing to become a core member of their team. He also develops a respect for Max Tennyson, whose younger personality Kevin's is said to resemble. [13][2]

While changed for the better, Kevin still often shows a delinquent side, seen when he attempts to sell the Rust Bucket 2 to Vulkanus for alien technology (albeit technology he intended to give to Ben)[14], conspires with Argit to sell weapons to both sides of a warring alien race,[15] and even pawns Princess Looma on Ben to get out of his engagement.[16] Despite this side of Kevin, Ben and especially Gwen still greatly trust him, and offer him second chances with each break in loyalty. Kevin would later tell Ben that he is grateful to them for having offered him compassion and changing his life.[17]

Kevin starts healthily channeling his delinquency through a love of cars and automotive engineering. He is extremely protective of his car, always upgrading and modifying it, and becomes very upset whenever it gets damaged, which happens on a fairly regular basis when Ben is around. He is also protective of his dog, Zed.

Kevin's morals have also improved. Though he may do unethical things like scheming to make money, his conscience is clear. He now shows disgust at those who take advantage of others and the innocent: he yells at Argit for abusing an alien's trust and sucker-punches him for not showing any remorse for the alien having sacrificed its life[18]; he brawls his dog's previous owner and calls him a jerk for his harmful and cold treatment of her[19]; he reprimands Ra'ad for being selfish and abandoning others to save himself (a parallel of Kevin's own past tendencies); he even stops himself from a great prospect of money after noticing the suit he was tasked with breaking open was highly sealed for a reason.[20]

Despite having adopted a more positive outlook on life, Kevin still suffers from his old insecurities, which resurface the most when he is mutated. The third time he mutated, he was visibly disgusted with himself and fluctuated between bouts of uncontrollable aggression and severe depression that jeopardized his relationships, especially with Gwen.[21] As Ultimate Kevin, he returned to calling himself the familiar 'freak' and 'monster', voicing jealous frustration against Ben for being a famous superhero while he remained mutated.[8]

While he cares for the innocent, Kevin is still willing to kill, either from necessity or his emotions and loyalties. He expressed he would kill any villains that went after his family or the Tennysons, was willing to let Ragnarok die to avenge his father[22], and even advised Ben to kill Victor Valadis in order to destroy the Nanochip Queen inside him.[23]

Powers and Abilities

Originally, Kevin's powers were believed to be of an unexplained mutation, then alien heritage,[22] but later explained to be of a unique genetic component.

Kevin has the ability to absorb the energy and matter of anything[DM 1] (excluding certain materials)[24] through his body at will and utilize it in various ways. If he's not absorbing excessive amounts of matter or biology directly into his body, he becomes wrapped in a coating that leaves his clothes intact. However, if he's wearing a Plumber Suit, the suit will not remain intact.

Energy Absorption

After absorbing energy, Kevin can channel energy through his hands to manipulate technology, discharge it as energy blasts, or physically enhance his body to speed up cellular regeneration, increase his strength, or recover from injuries at an accelerated rate. However, the energy will dissipate over time or through excessive use, so he is required to recharge.[10]

However, if Kevin absorbs energy, the energy will cause Kevin to become mentally unstable. Storing energy for long periods of time will worsen his instability. Energy absorption can sometimes easily turn into an addiction.

When Kevin has recently absorbed energy, he develops black marks around his eyes. This is a side effect of absorbing energy.[10]

Power Absorption

Similar to his ability to absorb energy, by absorbing the DNA, metabolism, and life force of other life forms, Kevin can use it as nourishment to sustain his health and strength. Absorbing all of someone's energy will kill them. Kevin can use the energy to acquire the creature's powers and undergoes mutation to accommodate the absorbed abilities. His powers read DNA and clone it.[DR 1]

Despite complete access to any of these absorbed abilities at anytime, they aren't as strong as their pure forms, as noticed by Diamondhead who estimated that they are only about 1/10 their full power, as seen when he was able to catch and crush Kevin 11's crystals with his bare hands while the others shattered upon hitting him.[25] This is the reason why Aggregor first turned P'andor, Andreas, Bivalvan, Ra'ad and Galapagus into pure energy before he absorbed their powers and abilities, so he could could use their power to their fullest extent. He also stated that when Osmosians absorb the life force of other beings, the new powers can only be used temporarily unless they were to drain all of that life form's energy.[26]

This ability can also be used to combine the DNA of two beings, which is what Servantis used Kevin for. Kevin was able to absorb some of Servantis' energy that brought out some past memories.[27] Kevin was able to carry the energy around on his hand and used it on Argit and Alan Albright to bring up their past involvement with the Rooters.[4] Kevin then used this energy to his advantage as he was able to permanently lock out Servantis from the Amalgam Kids' minds.[1]

Matter Absorption

Kevin absorbing steel

Kevin can absorb solid materials, coating himself in the substance which allows him to take on its properties. He will proportionally increase in physical strength and durability to whatever he absorbed.[DM 2][DM 3]

Kevin is able to absorb multiple materials at once. He also has the ability to apply to other people a coating of whatever material he has absorbed at the time, temporarily.[28]

Depending on the amount of the absorbed material Kevin has available, and how he distributes it, Kevin can either coat his body, or part of it, in the material as a second skin like armor,[29] or completely convert his body, or part of it, into a living version of the material. The amount that Kevin requires depends on the density of the material.

This ability has once been used to Kevin's detriment, when he was forced to synthesize a coating of Taydenite, thus incapacitating him.[14]

Kevin can also absorb liquids[DJW 2][DM 4], and when he does he gains the properties of that liquid. If Kevin absorbs mud, objects will pass through him without causing physical damage. He can even absorb bubblegum and fire.[DJW 3][DJW 4][DM 5]

If Kevin absorbs an elastic material, he can "sort of" stretch.[DM 5]

Initially, he was supposed to create an outer shell with a small amount of material - he could use a quarter to coat a forearm arm with metal, but not his whole body. Then, once he began to form weapons and tools with the material, it became more of a transformation into the substance.[MW 1]

Kevin is able to absorb the materialistic properties of living beings such as To'kustars,[30] Petrosapiens, Crystalsapiens, and Stone Creatures.[DJW 5]

Matter Manipulation

In Alien Force, following his second mutation which causes him to lose the ability to revert to his human form, he gradually begins learning how to use his absorbed matter in various new manners. He is able to use high levels of strength and durability as well as regenerative and shape-shifting abilities.[31] After returning to normal, he retained his newfound powers due to him now having knowledge of being able to do so.[32]

Kevin's normal Taydenite form

Kevin can repair objects of the current material he has absorbed either by turning it into a liquid form or releasing a liquid version of whatever material he has absorbed.[20] He can partially merge with the actual matter and manipulate the substance's form. Both abilities were used when he repaired the rock ceiling of a mine, fused the seal of P'andor's suit, morphed it around P'andor, and fused the arms together as makeshift handcuffs. He once used the metal he absorbed to create a helmet for Gwen to prevent the Lucubra from controlling her.[33]

Kevin can easily pick locks, using his powers to absorb the material of the lock, then form his finger into a key.[29]

Other Skills and Abilities

Even without his absorption powers, Kevin is shown to be stronger than an average human. Even the powerless Kevin was still a fairly proficient fighter and a useful asset to the team.[34][35] While not to the same extent as aliens like Tetramands, Kevin is capable of lifting/throwing the combined weight of several people with little strain. He is also capable of resisting impacts and blunt force trauma that would severely injure an ordinary person with moderate discomfort.

Kevin has some noticeable skill in brawling which he gained during his years as a runaway, a prisoner in Incarcecon, an alien tech dealer, and a member of the Plumbers. With his combat skills, he has proven on several occasions to be a highly formidable fighter, having held his own against and defeated opponents such as the Megacruiser robots,[25] Technorg,[25] and even Vilgax in a one-on-one fight.[36]

Kevin working on his car

Kevin is very smart, but his formal education has been erratic. He knows a lot about some things, and absolutely nothing about others.[DM 6] Despite lacking proper normal education,[37] Kevin possesses a vast scientific and technological knowledge of alien paraphernalia. When arguing with Ben that they both cannot use their powers while in their Plumber suits, Kevin stated that he made some alterations to the suits including propelling units and shock pulses.[38]

Kevin has great analytical and deductive skills, having been able to determine and find out specifically what happened in a battle between Aggregor and the Plumbers several hours after the battle, greatly impressing his friends and even gaining a compliment from Max that he could either be an expert police officer or a wanted criminal.[26]

Kevin has good motor skills, being able to race and chase in his car and the Rust Bucket 3. He is considered to be a better pilot than Ben.[DM 7]

Kevin is great at mechanics and engineering. He is shown to repair his car for the numerous damage it took during the course of the series. He also modified his car, setting alien tech for beneficial gears. On top of that, he built the DX Mark 10, a car that he reluctantly gave to Ben as his sixteenth birthday present.[23]

Kevin is shown to be very good with animals, even without trying. At one point, a Blowfish became strongly attached to Kevin.[38] Despite being well-trained and loyal to Khyber, Zed ultimately chose to join Kevin even after saving him from being crushed.[30]

Weaknesses

Insufficient absorption material

Kevin cannot absorb enough matter from small objects to coat himself completely and to do so he would need a sample approximate to him in size.

While Kevin can absorb all sorts of compatible matter, he cannot take too much of it. Such as with Ben's Omnitrix, where he became mentally unstable and lost all accounts of control from all the alien DNA absorbed.[11] However, Kevin later overcame this weakness when he absorbed numerous DNA samples from Ben's new Omnitrix and retained his sanity and self-control, albeit faking it to Ben.[1] Nonethelss, the process of absorbing alien DNA takes a toll on Kevin as it shows him reverting back leaves him tired.

Kevin is unable to use his absorption powers in a spacesuit, giving him a major disadvantage in combat.[39]

The material Kevin absorbs can put him at a disadvantage. For example, absorbing metal makes him vulnerable to electricity whereas absorbing wood makes him vulnerable to fire.

Kevin is afraid of alligators.[31]

Love Interests

Charmcaster

Caroline/Charmcaster kissing Kevin

Charmcaster tries to steal Kevin from Gwen in order to accomplish a scheme. She never liked him and was just taunting him.[DM 8]

Kevin thinks Charmcaster is hot, and was clearly attracted to her while in disguise. Charmcaster kissed Kevin on the lips which almost created a conflict between him and Gwen.[21] It should be noted that Charmcaster and Kevin shared a kiss long before the first on-screen kiss between Gwen and Kevin.[32]

After this incident, Kevin and Charmcaster are mostly enemies, with Kevin disliking Charmcaster until he learns just how similar they are. He initially attempts to brush this empathy off, but following the ordeal with the Rooters which upturns his whole life, he is more visibly open in his pity at Charmcaster's situation and how much he relates to it. When Gwen traps Charmcaster in her own bag and keeps her under the goal of becoming friends with her, Kevin seems relieved, knowing firsthand how Gwen can help change a person.[40]

Jennifer Nocturne

Jennifer Nocturne was a teenage actress Kevin admired, not just liking her skills but also herself. He introduced himself just before she took Ben to the party, but she paid little attention saying, "Oh of course you are." Later when Nocturne was kidnapped and saved by Kevin and Gwen, Nocturne asked Kevin to be her boyfriend. When Gwen heard this she became jealous of her and said angrily "I will peel you like a grape!".[41]

Trivia

  • Kevin watched Captain Planet and The X-Files when he was younger.[42]
  • In Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, Kevin lived in an apartment in Bellwood.[DM 9] He sometimes slept at his mother's house, which he bought for her, and his main garage was there.[DM 10] However, in Omniverse, Kevin lives in a garage in the same area as Friedkin University.[43][MW 2]
  • Kevin is keeping the Taydenite Car. He rebuilt his old car and uses the Taydenite only when he needs some money.[44][DJW 6][DJW 7]
  • Kevin and Gwen are famous on Earth, just not nearly as famous as Ben.[DM 11] Dwayne McDuffie compared their level of fame to that of American television personality Gayle King.[DM 12]
    • However, Kevin is still very famous in space.[DM 13]
  • Mrs. Levin used to read The Princess Bride to Kevin when he was younger.[DM 14]
  • The Alien Force crew knew how Kevin escaped the Null Void, but the story was never revealed in an episode.[DM 15]
  • When Kevin was in the Null Void, he had an alien pet that he called a dog.[DM 9] The pet once got sick and Kevin had to take him to a vet named 'P'strph', who made Kevin put a cone around his neck.[29][DM 17]
  • Kevin had a few girlfriends prior to Alien Force.[DM 18]
  • Kevin got the small, grey padlock that he wears for a necklace from his first crime, which was stealing a bike to run away from Bellwood.[pop-up 1][10]
  • Kevin was about five when Devin died.[DM 19] This has since been retconned in Omniverse, as it is revealed that Devin was a fake memory created by Servantis.[27][DJW 8]
  • Kevin's real father was abusive to him.[DJW 1][DJW 9]
    • After defeating the Rooters, Kevin regained his memories of his real father.[DJW 10]
  • In Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, Kevin needed a lot of whatever he copied to use his matter absorption powers.[45][DM 20] This is retconned in Omniverse, as he is shown coating his entire body with small amounts of material.[46][4]
  • Kevin was the first non-family member that Ben shared his secret with.[pop-up 2][10]
  • Kevin was portrayed differently in two different stages of production during the Original Series. In one stage, the creators intended for Kevin to be a mutant.[DJW 11][merch 1] Kevin's backstory was changed in Omniverse to make things more in line with this concept.[DJW 12]
    • In the second stage, he was to have an Omnitrix of his own. While this concept ultimately did not come to pass, it was eventually brought back in the reboot.[DR 2]
  • Kevin's Original Series design was made by Dave Johnson.[TP 1]
  • Kevin's Alien Force and Ultimate Alien design was initially created by Glen Murakami. His face was tweaked and his body was slimmed down by Glenn Wong, with colors added by Chris Hooten.[GW 1]
  • Kevin's Omniverse design was created by Derrick J. Wyatt.[DJW 13]
  • Kevin wears wholesters in Omniverse because his voice actor, Greg Cipes, wears them too.[DJW 14]
  • The out-of-universe reason for Kevin adopting Zed is due to Greg Cipes' love of animals. Early on, there were some thoughts of an Earthling dog for Kevin.[DJW 15]
  • A running gag in the series is Kevin becoming distraught every time his car gets damaged or destroyed during combat or miscellaneous events. The Rust Bucket 3 has also become a part of this running gag.
  • Kevin is the first villain from the Original Series to return in Alien Force.
  • It was Derrick's idea to give Kevin his scar in Omniverse.[DJW 16]
  • An alternate counterpart of Kevin does not exist in Rex's home universe.[DR 3] This was proven true during Ben's visit there, as he hypothesized that Kevin may not exist on Rex's Earth.[47]
  • There is no universe where Kevin wields the Omnitrix.[DJW 22]
