Dagon's Shrine is a teleporting shrine dedicated to Dagon, housing both his heart and Ascalon. It was first seen in A Knight to Remember.
Function[]
Pedestal of Ascalon buried in the heart
The shrine was built to contain the Dagon's heart and intentionally make it hard for any of his enemies to find. As such, the shrine routinely teleports between Dagon's Dimension and Earth; and (at least while on Earth) it never appears twice in the same place.[1][2]
The shrine is large and features a long walkway up to its centerpiece: a pedestal that held Ascalon as it continuously pierced the Dagon's heart. The long walkway features columns lined with life-sized statues of Esoterica, perfect for real Esoterica to blend in with.
History[]
Background[]
Sir George's legendary battle with the Dagon ended with him using the power of the sword Ascalon to cut into the demon's body and remove his heart. While the demon could still live without it, he was severely weakened, as the heart was his source of power. George was able to seal Dagon's body away by creating the Seal; meanwhile he left Ascalon still piercing the heart, as it doing so would prevent Dagon from regaining his power.[2]
According to Sir Driscoll, Dagon's shrine was built by "those who had fallen under the dragon's spell".[1] The worshippers built the building around the still-buried sword, and gave it the power to travel between dimensions, so that it would elude the grasp of Dagon's enemies, the Forever Knights.[2]
Ultimate Alien[]
In The Purge, Old George, after reuniting the Forever Knight factions under one order and having launched a failed purge of alien life on Earth, set out on a personal quest. He used calculus to determine where the shrine would next appear on Earth, and headed there without telling anyone else, appointing Driscoll in charge in his stead.
In A Knight to Remember, a party of knights led by Sir Driscoll intercepted George in the Orkney Islands, where he was waiting for the shrine to appear. Once it did, the group advanced inside, but not before the squire Winston silently broke off from the party, under the control of Dagon. Once inside, the group marched straight to the heart, unaware that Esoterica were hiding amongst statues of Esoterica, and were planning a surprise attack. Conduit Edwards and his members of the Flame Keepers' Circle had already arrived with Vilgax, thinking him Dagon and intending to reunite him with "his" heart. In the ensuing battle, George easily walked through all of the forces in his way by easily knocking them out, but Vilgax in his true form managed to knock him down and get to the heart first. Gripping Ascalon restored him to his normal form, and allowed him to pull it from the heart, donning its powerful armor. As Vilgax finished betraying Conduit Edwards and incapacitating everyone, Winston appeared; Dagon speaking through him. He enticed Vilgax with an even greater power than Ascalon's: his own, and teleported him and the heart to the Seal in order to break it. As this happened, Alien Force were following after the knights, halfway to the shrine's location in the Rustbucket 3, but Gwen perceived that Vilgax had moved back to the Seal. She agreed that in order to catch up to them, she'd have to teleport the trio out of the Rustbucket 3, severely draining her.
