The DNA Transmodulator is a machine invented and used by Dr. Animo to mutate animal DNA. Dr. Animo built it from scratch, using bought and stolen parts, and often wears it in most of his appearances.
Appearance[]
In the Original Series, the DNA Transmodulator was separated into two modules: one was for the head and one was for the chest. The head module looks like an Spaghetti Strainer being worn as an hat, with 2 headphone pads on the sides connecting to a chin strap. The main feature of the head module are two horns resembling those of a rhino, which act as the output of the machine. One of the headphone straps has a wire that tethers it to the chest module, which has a big dial strapped to the center. The inside of the dial glows red in the upper half and is black in the bottom half. The dial also has a secondary wire going down to the waist, connected to a walkie-talkie looking device.
In Omniverse, the DNA Transmodulator retains mostly the same appearance, with the dial being slightly redesigned, and the horns now resembling green antenna.
Function[]
The DNA Transmodulator was worn by Dr. Animo on his body, with the two separate modules on his head and body serving as the machine's output and controls, respectively. Through the output, the machine shoots out red energy beams which, when any animal tissue is targeted, profoundly changes the DNA of the target. The way in which the tissue is changed depends on whichever "phase" the machine is on; it essentially has two modes it can switch to.
- Phase #1: "Creating and Accelerating Mutations at the Genetic Level"
Activated by twisting the chest dial once, the beam causes existing animals to rapidly mutate into much larger, often much more dangerous and aggressive versions of themselves. This allows Dr. Animo to instantly create powerful minions out of any animals around him, and is the mode that he uses the most.
- Phase #2 : "Reanimation of Dormant Cells"
Activated by twisting the chest dial twice, the beam causes a near-complete reconstruction and revitalization of any animal that has been extinct, building upon the leftover remains, no matter if they're centuries old. Dr. Animo was able to implement this second phase after stealing some electronic components from a Mega Mart in Washington DC, and used it to successfully bring back extinct creatures from their fossils in a history museum.
A beam wave expelled from breaking the device was shown to be able to reverse the effects of either phase on a creature, reverting mutant creatures back to normal and brought-back creatures back down to their remains.
