Throughout the Classic Continuity, various retroactive additions or alterations of the continuity (otherwise known as retcons) have been made. This is because the crews behind each show take what they want and ignore what they do not like.[MW 1] Different story editors and designers often want or need to change preexisting canon. Sometimes, canon can be a good guideline. Otherwise, it can be creatively restrictive especially when the needs of the audience change.[DR 1]

Below are listed some of the retcons made throughout the franchise which contradict established continuity, some of which were off-screen information subject to revision.

Retconned In-Series Information[]

Ben 10[]

Ben 10: Alien Force[]

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien[]

Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens[]

Ben 10: Omniverse[]

  • Originally, two out of Alien X's three personalities needed to agree in order to perform an action.[22] From So Long, and Thanks for All the Smoothies onwards, all three have to agree.[23]
  • The pronunciation of Albedo's name is changed from "Al-bee-do" to "Al-bay-do".[24]
  • In The Galactic Enforcers, Vulkanus and Technorg's species' name was revealed to be Detrabytes.[25][pop-up 2][19] In Many Happy Returns, they are called Detrovites,[12] which was previously used in Ben 10: Protector of Earth, Vulkanus' Bandai card[Bandai 1] and the Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: The Wild Truth DVD.[DVD 1]
  • The original Earth Plumbers are revealed to have been a separate group until they joined the intergalactic Plumbers at some point.[26][note 1]
    • Correlating with this, the design of the Plumber Badges have been changed from depicting the symbol of Galvan technology to instead the symbol of Plumbers, the red spots on their uniforms.
  • In Ben 10: Alien Swarm, it was established that Elena was Ben's first crush. This was retconned in Showdown: Part 1, when Ben's first crush was revealed to be Patty Berkenfeld when he was in the third grade.[28]
  • The future established in Ultimate Alien was the true future of the Prime Timeline, and the future established in Original Series an alternate timeline,[29][30][DM 2][DM 3][DM 4] but that has since been changed as of Omniverse, with the re-introduction of the original Ben 10,000[31] as the current true future of Ben Prime.[DJW 2][DJW 3]
  • In The Purge, Mr. Baumann stated that he had not seen Ben since the latter was 12 years old. This is retconned with a flashback in Special Delivery featuring 15-year-old Ben and Mr. Baumann interacting with each other.
  • In Of Predators and Prey: Part 2, when Khyber saw that Ben had turned into Grey Matter, he states that "it appears this hunt requires another predator" before Rook stops him from whistling, indicating that the Nemetrix already had the DNA of a natural predator of the Galvans. However, the Faction only managed to obtain DNA from the Galvan predator in Showdown: Part 1.
  • During Omniverse's early run, Rook used contractions sporadically for some time.[32] However, it is later established that Revonnahganders consider using contractions as bad language.[33]
  • Originally, "To'kustar" was pronounced "Toe-coo-star".[34] The pronunciation is changed to "Toe-ku-star" from The Frogs of War: Part 1 onwards, which was previously used in Cosmic Destruction.
  • The Lewodan race underwent some changes from what was established in Con of Rath:
    • Firstly, the Lewodans were originally a monarchy. However, in Food Around the Corner, they are stated to be a republic.
    • Secondly, the term "Tiffin" was originally used as the title of the Prince of Lewoda. However, the context of that name has been altered, as it is revealed that all baby Lewodans are called Tiffins.[28][35][36]
  • Originally, Ditto's clones shared a link to keep track of each other,[pop-up 3][37] making it so that if one Ditto was hurt, all the others would feel the same pain.[37] Therefore, it is inferred that if one Ditto got killed, the others were automatically killed as well, thus negating the ability to form an army of clones. This is no longer the case, as each clone is independent from each other's pain, meaning a clone can be killed without harming the others.[38][39][DJW 4]
  • Originally, it was stated that Zombozo feeds on happiness or positive energy.[40] In Something Zombozo This Way Comes, it is stated that Zombozo feeds on fear instead.
  • Originally, Perk Upchuck was unable to consume human food.[41][pop-up 4][42] This is retconned, as he can now eat normal food as well as everything else.[DM 5][DJW 5][note 2]
  • In Vengeance of Vilgax: Part 1, Ben stated that he had last seen Vilgax when he threw him into space, referencing the events of Secret of the Omnitrix. However, this has been retconned in a flashback in Bengeance is Mine, showing that he had an encounter with Vilgax after that.
  • In Catch a Falling Star, Carl Nesmith had gotten plastic surgery to change his appearance to the point where he was no longer easily recognizable. However, in The Vengers, his present-day appearance is the same as how he looked in a flashback set five years earlier.
  • "Osmosian" is revealed to be a term coined by Servantis referring to a subspecies of human with a unique genetic component that gives them powers that vary between individuals rather than a different species of human-like aliens with absorption powers.[43]
    • Correlating with this, Max's partnership with Devin Levin is revealed to have been a series of fake memories that Servantis had implanted in his head as a means of watching over Kevin. Similarly, it is also revealed that neither the planet Osmos V nor the sun Osmos exist because they were both made up by Servantis.[43]
  • The Plumbers' Helpers now have different origins. In Weapon XI: Part 1, they are revealed to be humans whose appearances and DNA were altered when Kevin used his powers on them and their alien donors.
  • The flashback portion of Blukic and Driba Go to Area 51 introduces several retcons to various details regarding Max, Colonel Rozum, and Professor Paradox:
    • Firstly, in Moonstruck, it was shown that Max's first meeting with Verdona was his first time meeting an alien.[DM 6] In the aforementioned flashback, which takes place before his meeting with Verdona,[DJW 6] he meets Blukic and Driba.
    • Secondly, in Ultimate Alien, Rozum looked significantly younger than Max. However, the flashback he is seen as the boss of a teenage Max and looks almost the same more than 40 years later.
    • Thirdly, Rozum originally had no idea who Professor Paradox was when they appeared together on-screen.[44] This has been changed, as they used to work together at Area 51.
    • Fourthly, it was established that Paradox's experiment in 1952 had caused him to be stuck out of time.[45] In the aforementioned flashback, he was shown to be working for Area 51 when Max was a teenager in the 1960s.
  • It was previously shown with Rook Shi and Rook Ben's early appearances that Revonnahganders start off having tails (known as b'inthaks) at a young age before they eventually fall off at puberty.[28][46][47] Similarly, Rook Ben was initially named Young One because he had not gone through his naming ceremony.[DJW 7] It is later established in Rook Tales that the naming ceremony occurs after a young Revonnahgander's tail has fallen off, contradicting Shi's early appearances, in which she had both a name and a tail at the same time. Correlating with the change, Shi later appears without a tail.
  • In The Mother of All Vreedles, the Great Vault of Sulcus was on Sulcus itself. In Vreedlemania, it is embedded in an asteroid.
  • The flashback episode From Hedorium to Eternity introduces several retcons to details about Kevin:
    • In Undercover, Ben and Gwen were unaware that Kevin and Cooper are acquainted with each other. However, Kevin and Cooper become acquainted for the first time in the episode, with Ben and Gwen being present.
    • Secondly, Ben was unaware that Kevin could absorb matter until their reunion at age 15.[4] However, Ben first witnesses Kevin absorbing matter and demonstrating its use at age 11.

Retconned End Credit Information[]

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien[]

Ben 10: Omniverse[]

Retconned Crew Statements[]

Ben 10: Alien Force[]

  • Originally, Vulkanus' body was described as naturally being the way it appeared.[DJ 1] This has been retconned in Kevin's Big Score, with Vulkanus being revealed to have always been small.[DM 7] It has also been explained that he wore flesh-colored prosthesis in the Original Series.[DM 8]
  • It was originally stated that Kevin's surname Levin belonged to his stepfather Harvey.[DM 9] This is changed in Vendetta, as it is revealed that the Levin surname belonged to Kevin's biological father.

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien[]

Ben 10: Omniverse[]

  • Originally, Tetramands seemed fairly Bronze Age-y for their level of technology.[MW 3] This is retconned in Many Happy Returns, as Tetramands are shown to have a far more advanced civilization than humans.
  • Originally, SixSix and SevenSeven had no relation with each other.[DM 14][DM 15] This is retconned in Vilgax Must Croak, where it was revealed that they are brothers.
  • Rather than being naturally small, Vulkanus is revealed to have originally been large and muscular like the rest of his kind, until his fight with Ben lead him to being caught in an Element X-induced explosion. Vulkanus survived, but his body was destroyed, leading him to be put into a regeneration suit until he finally grows to full size.[52]

Retconned Pop-Up Trivia[]

Ben 10: Alien Force[]

  • Originally, the Forever Knights were like "Anti-Plumbers", exploiting unusual threats instead of fighting them.[pop-up 7][53] However from Be-Knighted onwards, the Forever Knights are revealed to be highly xenophobic.
  • Originally, the Omnitrix only held thousands of DNA samples.[pop-up 8][54] This is retconned two ways:
    • Firstly, the Codon Stream contained over one million DNA samples.[5]
    • Secondly, the Omnitrix was revealed to be a wireless receiver for the Codon Stream instead of containing DNA.[55]
  • Two facts about the Chimera Sui Generi were retconned in Ghost Town from what was originally established:
    • All female Chimera Sui Generi had a dark "beauty mark" somewhere on their center face tentacle,[pop-up 9][3] but none of the females seen in this episode have them.
    • Most Chimera Sui Generi were trained from birth for combat[pop-up 10][56][pop-up 11][DVD 2] and craved any chance for it,[pop-up 12][3] but in this episode, Vilgax states that most of them are innocent people.

Ben 10: Omniverse[]

Retconned Merchandise Information[]

Ben 10[]

Ben 10: Alien Force[]

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien[]

Ben 10: Omniverse[]

  • Rather than being brought to life by an environmental disaster,[Bandai 8] the Galvanic Mechamorphs were brought to life after one of Azmuth's projects went awry.[24]
  • Encephalonus IV was originally described as a gray, cloud-covered planet with lightning bolts constantly ripping through the sky in an unending electrical storm of spectacular cumulonimbus activity unrivaled by any in the universe.[AF VG 2] These storms were also the main source of power for the planet.[guide 1] This is retconned, as it is shown that the planet has relatively normal weather.[76]
  • Poiana Lüncas was originally described as an asteroid belt in the Andromeda Galaxy. In the distant past, it was a planet but was jack-hammered by the Talpaedans into pieces, a cluster of irregular chunks of rock the size of moons. Talpaedans were living and working on and within the asteroids that were left of this planet, mining the many precious ores and minerals still present. Beneath the surface of each asteroid were vast and complex mazes of caverns, lined with Talpaedans' unique luminous symbols that allowed them to know exactly where they were at any given point underground.[AP 1] This is slightly retconned in Of Predators and Prey: Part 2, as it is shown that Poiana Lüncas is an intact desert planet.
  • The Necrofriggians used to be the only living beings on Kylmyys.[AF VG 3] This is retconned with the introduction of the Psycholeopterrans.[26]
  • Originally, Khoros was a dusty and barbaric world where might makes right and survival was a constant struggle. Due to constant conflict, the planet's culture had long devolved, turning from a confederation of thriving city-states into a scorched and boundless wasteland.[Bandai 9] Nomadic tribes ruled by bloodthirsty warlords ceaselessly roamed the landscape, seeking out relics of Khoros' past glory, all in hopes of rediscovering the secrets that would gain them advantage over their enemies.[Bandai 10]
    • This was retconned in Omniverse as, judging by the House of Red Wind successfully hosting an auto show with participants from all over the galaxy, Khoros remains developed and civilized; its culture has not devolved; none of its city-states have crumbled; and its inhabitants have no issues surviving.[77]
  • It was previously stated that Galvan had three brains, with one in located at the center of the head and two smaller ones positioned behind each eye.[Bandai 11] This is retconned in For a Few Brains More, where it is revealed that Galvan only have two brains, one containing their intelligence and a pre-brain responsible for basic functions such as walking and talking.[28][78]
  • Originally, nothing actually lived on Anur Transyl.[Bandai 12] This is retconned, as Anur Transyl is shown to be inhabited by many species native to the Anur System.[69]

Other[]

Ben 10: Alien Force[]

  • The positioning and coloring of the Omnitrix/Ultimatrix symbols are explained as the result of the devices working properly compared to what was shown in the Original Series.[DM 18]
  • When Big Chill first appeared, he was shown being able to turn invisible.[79][CN 1] However, this ability is removed for the rest of his appearances due to being considered an animation error.[DM 17]

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien[]

Ben 10: Omniverse[]

  • The limited positioning of the symbols was a technical glitch in the original Omnitrix and Ultimatrix that caused the transformations to come out naked and cold. These errors were corrected in the current Omnitrix.[DJW 12]
  • The Omnitrix symbols being colored grey and white in the Original Series was because of a scratch guard that Ben did not know how to remove. As such, the symbols were "recolored" green when the scratch guard fell off off-screen sometime after Destroy All Aliens.[DJW 13]
  • During Alien Force's run, it was stated that the Omnitrix can recognize and accept Osmosian DNA.[DM 17] Much like everything regarding Osmosians, this has been altered in Omniverse, as the Omnitrix cannot accept DNA from mutants because they do not count as aliens.[DJW 14]
    • Tying into the retcons made to Osmosians, Aggregor is revealed to be a lab experiment created by the Rooters.[DJW 15]
  • While it was only established on-screen that Max's partnership with Devin Levin was a fake memory,[43] it would eventually be revealed that Devin never existed altogether.[DJW 16][DJW 17]
    • Furthermore, the photo of Devin and a young Kevin featured in Vendetta is revealed to have been faked.[DJW 18]

Trivia[]

  • Dwayne McDuffie did not consider the changes made to the Plumbers in Alien Force to be an official retcon.[DM 20][DM 21]
  • The decision to introduce Anodites and manna in Alien Force was influenced by Dwayne's opinion that magic and science fiction should not mix.[DRi 1]
  • The decision to have Ben retain his previously unlocked aliens in Vengeance of Vilgax: Part 1 was made because of the toyline.[CM 1]
  • In Omniverse, the Plumber Badge changed from depicting the symbol of Galvan technology to instead the symbol of Plumbers, the red spots on their uniforms due to the hourglass symbol design for the badges used in those series did not make any sense to the crew.
  • According to Derrick J. Wyatt, Primus was erased from continuity by the Annihilarrgh during the events of So Long, and Thanks for All the Smoothies.[DJW 19]
    • However, Matt Wayne stated that this is not definite as Primus' whereabouts were never addressed on-screen at any point during the series.[MW 4][MW 5][MW 6]
    • When the crew started production on Omniverse, one of the mandates they got from the higher-ups was to clean out a lot of the pointless and convoluted continuity that had been turning viewers off from the franchise. According to Derrick, the Omnitrix serving as both a literal way to walk in the shoes of another life form and a database for all known sentient life is a much cleaner concept.[DJW 20]
    • In Dwayne's pitch for Omniverse, Primus was to have been destroyed by Annihilus Stalk (who became the basis for the character Khyber) using the Predatrix (which became the basis for the Nemetrix).[OV Proposal 1]
    • When made aware of Matt's statements on the matter, Derrick stated there was a 0% chance that Primus was not erased from continuity.[DJW 21] He would later be elaborating that, since one of the Omnitrix's functions is as a storage device, there is no need for a backup.[DJW 22]
      • Derrick later stated none of the retcons featured in Omniverse were caused by Ben recreating the universe as Alien X,[DJW 23] putting his original statement into question. However, it is implied by Dan Riba that the universe being recreated was the reason for some of the retcons.[DRi 1]
  • The retcons to pop-up trivia seen in Omniverse are due to the fact that the creative team on the show did not have all the information. Derrick stated that he "tried to get a list of all those pop up facts a couple times but never got them"[DJW 24] and "[the creative team] want[ed] to be as in line with the Original Series as possible", indicating that some of the retcons might not have been made.[DJW 25]
    • For example, Ben 10,000 and Kai were stated to have a daughter, named Gwendolyn,[pop-up 32][65][pop-up 33][66] who never appeared on-screen. When asked if Gwendolyn still existed in the Original Future Timeline as of Omniverse, Derrick J. Wyatt initially said she did not,[DJW 26] stating that he hated that she was named after Ben's cousin Gwen and decided to ignore her existence.[DJW 27] When made aware that Gwendolyn's existence was revealed via pop-up trivia years later, Derrick admitted that he did not know she existed, and was probably confused by the earlier question. He also explained that the reason she was never used in Omniverse is because the crew, who had studied the Original Series episodes for research, did not have access to the pop-ups. Therefore, they were not aware that Ben 10,000 had a daughter.[DJW 25]
  • Many of the retcons seen in Omniverse had been made to have the continuity of the series become closer to what was shown in the Original Series. Derrick disagreed with the retcons that Dwayne and Glen Murakami made for Alien Force and Ultimate Alien because their retcons were not in line with the continuity of the Original Series.[DJW 28][DJW 29]
    • Regarding the Osmosians and Anodites, Derrick also mentioned that he did not want every aspect of Ben 10 lore to be derived from aliens as he considers that a misstep that consequently makes the overall universe of the franchise smaller and less interesting.[DJW 30][DJW 31][DJW 32]
    • Kevin's backstory was changed in Omniverse to make things more in line with the concept of him being a mutant[DJW 33] and so not everything was derived from aliens.[DJW 30]

Notes[]

  1. The point in time in which the Earth Plumbers integrated with the galactic Plumbers is unclear:
  2. Despite being shown to be able to drink smoothies in In Charm's Way during Alien Force, this was not considered as a retcon by the crew, as the subtext in this scene was that Mr. Smoothy's smoothies are so far removed from food that even Upchuck can drink it.[PAD 1]
