The Codon Stream is a liquid database containing the DNA of sapient beings from across the Milky Way and beyond, housing a total of 1,000,910 DNA samples.[note 1] It was created by Azmuth to be used to link transformations to the prototype Omnitrix and Ultimatrix.
Appearance[]
The Codon Stream is a system of rivers of "green lava" that are spread throughout Primus. The Codon Stream originated in a volcano, which was actually the processing plant for the DNA of the stream.
History[]
Background[]
The DNA samples catalogued within the Codon Stream are either gathered individually by either Myaxx, the Volaticus Biopsis, or anyone wielding an Omnitrix-type device.
During a visit to Flors Verdance to acquire Florauna DNA,[pop-up 1][1] Myaxx unknowingly also added Ectonurite DNA due to Zs'Skayr possessing the Florauna she was sampling DNA from.[pop-up 2][1]
Ben 10[]
In Ghostfreaked Out, the Ectonurite DNA was removed from the Codon Stream when Zs'Skayr escaped the Omnitrix, which also removed Ghostfreak from the active playlist.
In Be Afraid of the Dark, the Codon Stream gained a new sample of Ectonurite DNA when the Omnitrix unknowingly scanned Zs'Skayr.
Ben Tennyson initially assumed that there were approximately 10,000 DNA samples in the Codon Stream, evident by his Original Future Timeline counterpart, Ben 10,000.[2]
Five Years Prior to Omniverse[]
At some point after Ben had first met Azmuth,[3] the Ectonurite DNA sample was removed from the Codon Stream. This resulted in Ghostfreak being removed from the active playlist[4] and allowed Zs'Skayr to escape from the Omnitrix for a second time.[5]
The Codon Stream used to contain Conductoid DNA until Feedback was removed (and seemingly destroyed) by Malware.[DJW 7] Following the incident, Azmuth had recalibrated the Codon Stream to reject further Conductoid samples for the next five years.[6][MY 1]
Alien Force[]
The Codon Stream was first alluded to in War of the Worlds: Part 1, when Azmuth revealed that (via the Codon Stream) the Omnitrix had access to over 1,000,000 samples from every sapient species in the Milky Way Galaxy. When Azmuth unlocked the Master Control for the Omnitrix, the watch itself stated there were currently 1,000,903 DNA samples available in the Codon Stream.
In Ben 10: Alien Swarm, the total number of samples in the Codon Stream increased 1,000,904 due to Ben obtaining Nanomech by scanning several Microchip-possessed citizens.
In Ghost Town, the Codon Stream acquired a new sample of Ectonurite DNA when Ben regained Ghostfreak by scanning Zs'Skayr.
The Codon Stream first appeared in Primus.
Ultimate Alien[]
As of Ultimate Alien, there are currently 1,000,910 samples in the Codon Stream due to the Ultimatrix scanning five aliens from the Andromeda galaxy, providing Ben with Waterhazard, Terraspin, NRG, Armodrillo, and Ampfibian.
In Simian Says, the Codon Stream experienced problems with its Arachnachimp DNA sample.
Connection to the Original Omnitrix/Ultimatrix[]
The Codon Stream is the key to the primary feature of the original Omnitrix and the Ultimatrix in that both were wireless receivers connected to the Codon Stream, allowing them to alter the DNA of their wearer.
When the Omnitrix in question was activated, it opened up a holographic display of all aliens unlocked. When the faceplate was pushed back into place, it emitted a signal that is picked up by the volcano on Primus, then sent throughout the Codon Stream and back to the Omnitrix, with the selected alien's DNA database attached. The selected DNA is then merged with the wearer's DNA, transforming the user into the selected alien.
The connection between the Omnitrix and Ultimatrix and the Codon Stream seemed to be remarkably strong, able to traverse dimensions; Ben was able to transform while in the Null Void, outside of the universe in the Forge of Creation,[7] in a parallel universe,[8] and even while trapped in a video game.[9]

Etymology[]
Codon is a basic unit of genetic code, consisting of three nucleotides.
Trivia[]
- It was stated in Primus that the Codon Stream contains the DNA of every sentient species in the Universe.[18] This was retconned in Fame with the introduction of the Andromeda aliens, as the Ultimatrix has to scan them to add their DNA to the Codon Stream.[BTP 1]
- As a result of Feedback's destruction, Conductoid DNA is one of the two known DNA samples from the Milky Way Galaxy that Ben could only access with the new Omnitrix; the other being the functionally extinct Vladat DNA.[19]
- Even though all Celestialsapiens are born in the Forge of Creation, some travel to and live in the Milky Way Galaxy, explaining how Alien X's DNA was sampled into the Codon Stream.[DM 3]
- Because the Ultimate forms are by-products of originally existing DNA, they are not found within the Codon Stream because strictly speaking, they do not exist in the universe as a collectable species.[DM 4][DJW 9]
- Unlike the previous models, the new Omnitrix does not rely on the Codon Stream for transformation. Instead, the DNA is stored within itself in a computerized form.[DJW 1]
- The Codon Stream originally contained Chronian DNA prior to Race Against Time before being retconned into an alternate timeline in Ben 10,000 Returns.[BTP 1]
- Duncan Rouleau believes that Chronian DNA still exists in other realities in the multiverse.[DR 2]
- Codon Stream originally had Osmosian DNA before the Omniverse retcon.[DM 1]
- Derrick J. Wyatt believed that the Codon Stream possessed Martian DNA,[DJW 10] but Matt Wayne disagreed.[MW 5]
- Matt Wayne claims that Codon Stream has Cryptid DNA,[MW 6] but Derrick J. Wyatt believed it did not.[DJW 11]
- Duncan Rouleau believes that Codon Stream has the DNA of Cascan, Fulmini, Ekoplektoid, Bashmouth's Species and Xerge.[DR 3][DR 4]
Notes[]
- ↑ It was stated that Primus was no longer the source of DNA for the Omnitrix in Omniverse.[DJW 1]
- Derrick J. Wyatt joked that Primus was erased from continuity by the Annihilarrgh in So Long, and Thanks for All the Smoothies.[DJW 2]
- Matt Wayne stated that this is not definite as it wasn't addressed in the series.[MW 1][MW 2][MW 3]
- One of the mandates the crew got from the higher-ups when they started Omniverse was to clean out a lot of the pointless and convoluted continuity that had been turning viewers off from the franchise. According to Derrick, the idea that the Omnitrix is a way to walk in the shoes of another life form, and the original Alien Force idea that it is a database for all known sentient life is a much cleaner concept.[DJW 3]
- In Dwayne McDuffie's pitch for Omniverse, Primus was to have been destroyed by Annihilus Stalk (who became the basis for the character Khyber) using the Predatrix (which became the basis for the Nemetrix).[OV Proposal 1]
- When made aware of Matt's statements on the matter, Derrick stated there was a 0% chance that Primus was not erased from continuity,[DJW 4] later elaborating that, since one of the Omnitrix's functions is as a storage device, there is no need for a backup.[DJW 5]
- Derrick later stated none of the retcons featured in Omniverse were caused by Ben recreating the universe as Alien X,[DJW 6] putting his original statement into question. However, it is implied by Dan Riba that the universe being recreated was the reason for some of the retcons.[DRi 1] As the topic was never addressed in the series, the wiki considers Primus to still be canon.
