If a crew member says something then that statement is generally going to be treated as fact unless there are other statements by other crew members contradicting the statement or the show proves the statement wrong. But I'm fine with "According to Derrick J. Wayatt/Dwayne McDuffie". It's just that this franchise is over a decade old and we have a million statements floating around from the people involved with the franchise. McDuffie even made his own forurm just to answer questions and explain things. So every notable page is going to have at least a few "according to...".
I'm neutral on your proposed replacement for "According to Crew Member X", but I agree that we need 'citation needed' and 'toy info' tags.
Defeats the point of references. References are used to point out the source of the information given. Meaning the episode in which the information was shown or given, or the forum page (or archive, someone needs to look into archiving them too) on which it was stated by a crew member.
References should not be used for character names.
Well, I know that, and I would be totally fine replacing statements like: "According to Rook, Earth is an open system." to just "Earth is an open system." as it is a fact and I actually tried to suggest doing just that many years ago but most people didn't want the information to be removed. Hence using ref tags is a middle path.

It's not a very good one honestly.

See, this is where I suggest NOT to use ref tags in the rules. Here is where 'According to...' should be used.
The irony is killing me xD
"As mentioned by" actually sounds good, but on a case by case basis.

That would be a good alternative.
