Ben 10: Alien Force: Vilgax Attacks is the third game based on Ben 10: Alien Force and the fifth game in the franchise.

Synopsis[]

Play as 10 alien heroes!

  • New and old alien forms unite in an action-packed adventure!
  • Explore never before seen alien home planets!
  • Battle Vilgax and other villains from the show!

Plot[]

1: Bellwood[]

In the beginning, all aliens are available, but they are locked by the end, and can only be unlocked through progression.

At night, over Bellwood, Vilgax flies in his ship, where he orders Psyphon to activate the Null Void Projector, releasing many of its prisoners to invade Earth. Psyphon is ordered by Vilgax to co-ordinate the ground battle, as well as deal with Ben. Upon arrival, he encounters Ben, Gwen and Kevin together, prepared to fight. Just as Ben attempts to use Alien X, he is stopped by Professor Paradox, who informs him that now is not the right time to use Alien X. The trio split up to face off Vilgax's forces, with Ben traversing the streets and buildings of Bellwood in search of Psyphon. He eventually finds him and defeats him, but as a last ditch effort, Psyphon brings a Mr. Smoothy on a nearby billboard to life, whom Ben brawls with, subsequently destroying him by transforming into multiple aliens one after another (except Alien X), which causes the Omnitrix to malfunction. Azmuth soon appears, calling out Ben for transforming multiple times in a row, which has led to the Omnitrix entering its reboot cycle, leaving most of Ben's aliens locked away. Despite Ben, Gwen and Kevin's best efforts, Professor Paradox arrives to tell them that they are too late, as Vilgax has successfully taken over Earth. Fortunately, as a solution, he sends them back into the past, in order to retroactively prevent Vilgax's actions. Professor Paradox then lends a Plumber Badge to the trio, from Max himself, who is on a secret mission in space. The badge plays a message from Max, who reveals that he left for his mission, attempting to find an energy core that Vilgax could use to power up his Null Void Projector, adding that he is going to Vulpin (Wildmutt's home planet) to find one there. Ben soon calls over Ship to provide them transportation, turning into his spaceship form, and the trio are soon off.

2: Vulpin[]

Spidermonkey, Big Chill, Humungousaur, Swampfire, and Cannonbolt are only available (Swampfire and Goop in the DS version).

Upon arrival on Vulpin, Ben asks Gwen and Kevin to stay put with Ship while he deals with the threat alone, pointing out that if Vilgax finds him, it'll take all of them to fight him off. Ben soon travels through the refinery on the planet, fighting all the local Vulpimancers, destroying Vilgax's Crewmen, and defeating a two-headed snake. Near the end of his journey, Ben encounters the Vreedle Brothers (Darkstar in the DS version), who have been hired to stop Ben, who defeats them both, and also successfully destroys the energy core. Following the battle, Gwen and Kevin arrive, where they find another Plumber Badge, with another message from Max, who reveals that Vilgax and his forces are on to them, hunting for more energy cores, and he is currently headed to Terradino (Humungosaur's home planet) to find another one.

3: Terradino[]

Goop is unlocked (Humungousaur and Spidermonkey in the DS version).

Arriving on Terradino, they find another message from Max, stating that the energy core is located in the nearby temple and that Vilgax's forces are already there. Ben once again tells Gwen and Kevin to stay and hold off Vilgax if he shows up. Traveling through the temple, Ben solves complex puzzles and fights both Vilgax's droids and crewmen, but also Charmcaster's rock monsters. Ben confronts Charmcaster inside the temple, and despite Charmcaster using the temple's complex defenses as well as her golems, Ben is ultimately the winner, eventually destroying the energy core, thus destroying the temple. The trio then finds another message from Max, stating that the next energy core is on Encephalonus IV; Brainstorm's home planet, but warns them that their messages are being intercepted, proven by the message glitching when Max comes to warning about Ben's "old enemy".

4: Encephalonus IV[]

Brainstorm is unlocked (Big Chill is also unlocked, but in the DS version).

While arriving on Encephalonus IV, Ben has watched Max's message nearly twelve times, but is unable to figure out who his old enemy is. Again, Kevin and Gwen stay with Ship in order to fend off Vilgax if need be. After making his way through Encephalonus IV's complex security system, dealing with the cyber squids and Vilgax's forces of drones, Ben finally discovers his enemy: Darkstar (The Vreedle Brothers in the DS version), who is also after the energy core, presumably to absorb its power. Despite Darkstar's threats, Ben successfully defeats him and destroys the energy core. Reuniting with Gwen and Kevin, they find another Plumber Badge with a message from Max. He tells that the final energy core is in Anur Phaetos, the home of Zs'Skayr, but before the message can continue, it is soon hijacked by Vilgax, who dares Ben to journey to Anur Phaetos to find the energy core, claiming he will not be able to find it. Vilgax's mockery appears to hold true, as Anur Phaetos is not exactly a planet, but an alternate dimension.

5: Anur Phaetos[]

Echo Echo is unlocked (note that Anur Phaetos is unavailable on the DS version, but Echo Echo is still unlocked).

As the trio are flying through space in an effort to find Anur Phaetos, out of the blue, Verdona arrives. She states that Max sent her to help them, using her powers to transport them to the Anur System, where they are accidentally split up, leaving Ben alone. To make things worse, Zs'Skayr is revealed to be well and "alive", darkly telling Ben that he was unwise to visit his domain. After defeating the many Ectonurites through using various light sources, Ben confronts Zs'Skayr himself and defeats him by using his only weakness of light. Gwen, Kevin, and Ship find Ben by tracking his mana, but unfortunately Gwen isn't able to find Verdona, who is long gone. Luckily, Professor Paradox arrives and sends them back to their own dimension, stating that Max knew his transmissions were being intercepted and attempted to deceive Vilgax. Although all of the remaining cores have seemingly been destroyed, Vilgax has someone under his employment, making a new one by using the energy from Taydenite on the planet MorOtesi.

6: MorOtesi[]

Chromastone is unlocked.

The trio then arrive on MorOtesi, and are shocked to discover that Vilgax's mysterious accomplice is none other than Cooper. Realizing he has been tricked, and that his research is going to allow Vilgax to conquer the Earth, he formulates a plan to help direct Ben to the scientific research center where all the Taydenite and his equipment is being kept. After fighting his way through the radioactive planet, Ben discovers another accomplice of Vilgax-Albedo. Ben defeats Albedo, who transforms into some of Ben's aliens to fight, and also destroys the energy core he was finishing. Gwen and Kevin subsequently arrive, explaining that Cooper helped in bypassing the security system to let them in. To the Tennysons' delight, they also meet Max, in the flesh, who is all too happy to be reunited with them. But, even though they have destroyed most of the energy cores, Max sadly lets them know that there is one final core, located in the Null Void.

7: Null Void[]

Jetray is unlocked (Murk Upchuck is also unlocked, but only in the DS version).

Max reveals the final energy core is hidden among his stash in the Null Void, back when he was called "The Wrench", but has a special device to enter the Null Void, called a skeleton key. The problem is that it can only transport one person, which Ben uses, and is thus ordered by Max to not destroy the last energy core, which can recharge the key and return him. Ben enters the Void and defeats the many forces of Vilgax, and during the journey, he discovers that D'Void is now living in Max's old hideout, and is aided by a pair of Null Guardians, and he fights Ben, gaining energy from his Kormite generators. Ben is able to defeat D'Void by freezing his generators as Big Chill, and finally finds the last core, as well as a family photo from the summer when Ben first found the Omnitrix. Using the core, he returns back to his companions, no time having passed since Ben left, and they are successful.

8: Bellwood Revisited[]

Soon, the team return back to Earth, in Bellwood, where they find Vilgax carrying out his invasion. Fortunately for them, since they destroyed all of the remaining energy cores, the Null Void Projector soon runs out of energy, leaving only the remaining aliens to defeat. While Gwen, Kevin and Max split up to deal with Vilgax's remaining forces, Ben is told to go to Vilgax's ship to fight him. Ben eventually fights his way through the streets of Bellwood, fighting three of the largest brawlers in the Null Void, before reaching the tractor beam right underneath the Chimeran Hammer. Beamed up inside, Ben meets Vilgax, whom he fights in the final battle, but as he is down, Psyphon attempts to destroy Ben with the Null Void Projector, by firing a huge amount of unfiltered Null energy. At that very moment, Professor Paradox arrives on scene, ordering Ben to use Alien X now. Ben thus transforms, and inside himself, he meets Bellicus and Serena, whom he argues with briefly for help, before they finally relent. Back in the real world, Psyphon fires the Null energy at Alien X, but things take a turn when he deflects the portal to appear behind Psyphon instead, who gets sucked into the Null Void, along with Vilgax, and soon the entire Chimeran Hammer. Outside, Alien X transforms back to Ben, as he and his companions marvel at having succeeded in their mission. Azmuth arrives once more, commending Ben for his efforts in saving the world, and unlocks a new feature on the Omnitrix.

Gameplay[]

Compared to the previous games, Vilgax Attacks is a much more expanded game, with new controls and features. While Ben 10: Protector of Earth and Ben 10 Alien Force were action adventure platformer games with fixed camera views, this game puts more emphasis on combat and exploration, and allows the player to move the camera around Ben, giving the option of "points of interest", which will allow the camera to lock on the direction where the player needs to go. Similar to Protector of Earth, many aliens and combos are unavailable early on in game, but can be unlocked through progression. Again, certain aliens are necessary to solve puzzles or overcome obstacles; for instance, Humongousaur can move large objects to place on switches and pry open doors, while Echo Echo can create clones to activate multiple switches and shatter crystals. Combos once again use light, heavy and special attacks chained together, and can be unlocked by collecting yellow orbs, however there are much less combos to unlock per alien; to compensate, there are now an average of four unique button inputs for each combo (in the DS version, there is only one button to attack, and one to block). Additionally, unlike previous games, timing out and detransforming is not present, however the game still uses an energy meter that will decrease as combos are used, but will increase as enemies are attacked. Both health and energy can be increased with upgrades, in the form of Omnitrix badges scattered across levels, each of them being part of a set of five, which increases health and energy.

    Continuity[]

    • When Azmuth appears after the Omnitrix powers down to recharge, he chastises Ben for failing to remember that making so many quick changes in a row will break it, calling back the events of Good Copy, Bad Copy.
    • When Professor Paradox shows Taydenite and mentions Vulkanus' stash, Kevin becomes horrified, calling back the events of Kevin's Big Score.
    • After Alien Force arrives at MorOtesi and met Cooper, Gwen tells to Cooper that someone has been using him for his scientific genius and telekenetic mind, and Kevin replies "Again!", referring to the events of Undercover.
    • At the end of the game, Ben says to Azmuth "You're not gonna power it down again are you?" even though during the first Bellwood level Ben powered it down due to constant transforming.

    Errors[]

    Trivia[]

    • In the game, when the aliens say their names, they sound the same way they do on the Ultimate Omnitrix toy, except for Cannonbolt who sounds the way he did in the Original Series episode, Game Over when he said after getting the Cannonbolt icon, "Cannonbolt style!".
    • In the first Bellwood level, when you enter an elevator, a remix of the Original Series theme is heard.
    • The DS version of the game has some notable and unique differences from console versions:
      • It is a 2d platformer game, just like the DS versions of Protector of Earth and Alien Force.
      • It marks the first and only time Vilgax has used his hammer or the gun in his holster, which were present in some of his Alien Force promotional art. He uses the former to bludgeon, project electric shocks, and recall when tossed like a boomerang; whereas he uses the latter to shoot a wide beam of electricity or take small laser pot shots at Ben.
      • An extra scene happens at the end of Albedo's bossfight, where after being defeated, he tries to turn into Alien X, but is left trapped debating with Bellicus and Serena.
      • The sound heard when collecting a Plumber Badge is the same as the one heard when collecting a Sumo Slammer card in Protector of Earth.
      • Ben's transformations during cutscenes have the same sound as they do in the Original Series.
    • In the "Plumber Database" in the DS version, several characters have currently outdated species or home world listed for them:
    • The font used for the text in game, as well as Cosmic Destruction, is known as Ellipsoideogram.
    • This game has gameplay similar to Ristar, in which the main hero goes to six planets (not counting Earth) and battles villains before fighting the main villain, who wants power to conquer the universe.
    • The DS version of this game was packaged in a "Triple Pack" with other Ben 10 DS games by 1st Playable Productions: Ben 10: Protector of Earth and Ben 10: Alien Force.
